Note on period: VNP10 (Suomi NPP) starts on 2012-01-19, VJ110 (NOAA-20) on 2018-01-05 and VJ210 (NOAA-21) on 2023-02-10 (per CMR). No new VNP10 data are expected after 2 November 2026, and production stopped during the Suomi NPP anomaly of 10–21 July 2026.

How to read the resolution
  • Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
  • Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
  • Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
  • The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.

Overview

Global snow cover from VIIRS, produced by the NASA snow team with an approach developed alongside the MODIS Collection 6 snow algorithm and almost identical to it (NDSI plus data screens), so that the MODIS snow record begun in 2000 can continue. Using the VIIRS imagery bands I1 (0.64 µm) and I3 (1.61 µm), it has a finer 375 m resolution than MODIS (500 m), and provides daily snow cover (A1), cloud-gap-filled daily snow cover (A1F), 0.05° snow cover percentage (C1) and a 375 m global cloud-gap-filled map (D1F) for each satellite (VNP10, VJ110, VJ210).

What changes with the successor

VIIRS Snow Cover Version 1 (VNP10 C1) → VIIRS Snow Cover Version 2 (C2)

Transition: 2024-06

A version with improved algorithms, cloud masking and noise detection that added NOAA-20 (VJ110) products. Version 1 (Suomi NPP only) stopped production on 17 June 2024, and NOAA-21 (VJ210) products were added in January 2026.

Aspect VIIRS Snow Cover Version 1 (VNP10 C1) VIIRS Snow Cover Version 2 (C2)
Satellites Suomi NPP (VNP10) only Suomi NPP (VNP10) + NOAA-20 (VJ110, released 2023-06) + NOAA-21 (VJ210, released 2026-01)
Algorithm and inputs C1 algorithm Improved snow algorithm, better cloud masking, enhanced noise detection (per NSIDC)
Products L2, daily (A1), gap-filled daily (A1F), daily CMG (C1) Same set + 375 m global gap-filled map (D1F, DOIs registered in 2025)
Metadata mask_values and mask_meanings attributes Renamed flag_values and flag_meanings for CF-1.6; Projection variable added
Production Forward processing ended 2024-06-17 Current version

Things to watch when switching

  • Do not mix V1 and V2; download the whole period again as V2.
  • Code that reads the mask_values attribute must switch to flag_values.

Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show

Daily data (VNP10A1) hold the single "best" observation of the day for each cell — the swath with solar zenith nearest local solar noon, nearest nadir and with the greatest cell coverage — so they are instantaneous values. All VIIRS satellites fly afternoon orbits, so their observing time differs from morning Terra MODIS. Cloud-gap-filled values (A1F) may be as old as the run of cloudy days.

  • The swath each pixel came from can be found with granule_pnt and the GranulePointerArray and GranuleBeginningDateTime attributes in the file.
  • Cloud_Persistence in the gap-filled product counts consecutive cloudy days (0 = clear today). A value of n means the snow value is from the clear day n days earlier.
  • Gap filling restarts each water year (1 October in the Northern Hemisphere, 1 July in the Southern). On the first day cloudy pixels get persistence 1, and a nearly cloud-free map usually takes five to seven days.
  • When a whole tile is missing for a day, the previous day's gap-filled map is repeated and persistence increases by one for every pixel.
  • In VNP10C1 (0.05°) the snow percentage is the share of snow among all 375 m observations in the cell (snow, no snow, cloud and flagged values), with cloud percentage given separately. Antarctica is deliberately set to 100% snow (code 243).
  • No data are produced at night or during polar darkness.

Example code

Downloads one day of NOAA-20 (VJ110A1F) cloud-gap-filled snow cover with earthaccess and reads it (pip install earthaccess h5py numpy). Variables are located by name, so you do not need to know the HDF-EOS5 group path.

import earthaccess
import h5py
import numpy as np

earthaccess.login() # free NASA Earthdata account
results = earthaccess.search_data(
    short_name="VJ110A1F", version="2",
    temporal=("2024-01-15", "2024-01-15"),
    bounding_box=(124, 33, 132, 39),   # (west, south, east, north)
)
files = earthaccess.download(results, "vj110a1f")

def find(h5, name):
    hits = []
    h5.visititems(lambda k, v: hits.append(k) if k.endswith("/" + name) else None)
    return h5[hits[0]]

for f in files:
    with h5py.File(f, "r") as h5:
        ndsi = find(h5, "CGF_NDSI_Snow_Cover")[:].astype("float32")
        cp = find(h5, "Cloud_Persistence")[:]
    ndsi[ndsi > 100] = np.nan          # 201+ are codes for night, water, cloud, missing
    snow = ndsi > 0 # example: treat NDSI snow cover 1-100 as snow (tune for your study)
    print(f, np.nanmean(snow), (cp == 0).mean())

Practical tips

  • Delivery of Suomi NPP data (VNP10) ends on 2 November 2026. Switch the short names in your scripts to VJ110 (NOAA-20) or VJ210 (NOAA-21) and check for offsets where the satellite changes.
  • NDSI_Snow_Cover values 0–100 are NDSI, not fractional snow cover. Choose your own snow/no-snow threshold and report it in your paper.
  • Codes differ from MODIS: VIIRS has 251 (missing L1B), 252 (failed calibration), 253 (bowtie trim) and so on instead of 200 (missing), and the NDSI scale_factor is 0.001 (MODIS 0.0001). Quality variable names also differ (Basic_QA, Algorithm_bit_flags_QA).
  • There are no VIIRS equivalents of the MODIS 8-day (A2) and monthly (CM) products or of the snow albedo layer. Composite the daily data yourself if needed.
  • Users reported that the PROJ string in the NSIDC user guide (WGS84 ellipsoid) does not georeference correctly in GIS, and NSIDC confirmed that the MODIS sphere (+proj=sinu +R=6371007.181) is correct. Set coordinates from the XDim and YDim variables.
  • Known issues include erroneous snow-free areas on the Antarctic Peninsula (difficult cloud detection), weave and stitching patterns at swath edges, day-to-day lake position wobble, and errors over warm surfaces, bright surfaces and lake ice.
  • Hall et al. (2024) report that VIIRS maps slightly more snow than MODIS (a less conservative cloud mask and different overpass time). Check the difference over the overlap period before joining with the MODIS record.
