MISR

Terra Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) Level 2 Aerosol (V23, 4.4 km) and Level 3 Component Global Aerosol

Update delayed

Update delayed

The standard (FINAL) L2 aerosol product (MIL2ASAE V003, algorithm V23) and the daily and monthly L3 products stop at 12 October 2022, because the change in Terra's orbit altitude required a reworked processing system. Since then only the provisional FIRSTLOOK L2 (MIL2ASAF, product version 30) is produced daily (as checked on 2026-10-13, through the 11 October orbits). No schedule for FINAL L2 and L3 processing after October 2022 could be confirmed, and NASA projects the end of Terra science operations in February 2027 because of fuel and power limits.

FIRSTLOOK L2 (MIL2ASAF) runs from 2017-11-01 to the present; orbits from 2022-10-13 onward are produced with the new processing system (product version 30), and as checked on 2026-10-13 they extend to the 2026-10-11 orbits.

How to read the resolution
  • Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
  • Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
  • Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
  • The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.

Overview

MISR on NASA's Terra satellite images each location with nine cameras at angles from nadir to 70.5° fore and aft in four bands (446, 558, 672 and 867 nm), and uses those multi-angle views to retrieve aerosol optical depth and particle size, absorption and non-sphericity over land and ocean. Its record since 2000 is widely used alongside MODIS for long-term aerosol change, wildfire smoke and dust, and climate model evaluation. Global coverage takes nine days, and since October 2022 the standard (FINAL) products have stopped, leaving only provisional (FIRSTLOOK) data for recent years.

What changes with the successor

MISR L2 Aerosol V22 (17.6 km) → MISR L2 Aerosol V23 (4.4 km)

Transition: 2018-02

V23 raised the aerosol retrieval resolution from 17.6 km to 4.4 km and moved from HDF4 to NetCDF-4; the whole mission was reprocessed as V23 (MIL2ASAE V003).

Aspect MISR L2 Aerosol V22 (17.6 km) MISR L2 Aerosol V23 (4.4 km)
Retrieval resolution 17.6 km 4.4 km × 4.4 km
File format HDF4 stacked-block format NetCDF-4, with latitude, longitude and time for each retrieval
Field names V22-specific names Streamlined names consistent with other satellite products (e.g. Aerosol_Optical_Depth)
Algorithm V22 algorithm Additional cloud screening, extra lookup-table AOD grid points below 0.025, veiling-light correction of L1B2 radiances, chlorophyll (underlight) correction over dark water, near-surface wind from MISR glint, standardised land mixture selection and uncertainty
Validation level V22 level Aerosol_Optical_Depth Stage 3 validated; other particle properties Stage 2

Things to watch when switching

  • Analyses built on V22 files and code need rewriting for V23, since both field names and grid changed.
  • The quality statement reports wider coverage and better agreement with AERONET-DRAGON deployments at 4.4 km, though formal validation of V23 AOD was still ongoing when it was written.

Available variables

L2 field names follow the V23 L2 aerosol Data Product Specification; the main fields sit in the NetCDF group 4.4_KM_PRODUCTS (raw values in 4.4_KM_PRODUCTS/AUXILIARY, angles in GEOMETRY). Optical depth fields refer to 550 nm and the fill value is -9999.0. L3 variable names follow the CGAS Data Product Specification (F15_0032) and sit in the NetCDF group Aerosol_Parameter_Average.

Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show

L2 values are snapshots at the time Terra passed overhead (morning orbit); L3 values are statistics of those L2 retrievals collected on a 0.5° grid by day, month, season and year.

  • Terra is a morning-orbit satellite with a nominal 10:30 local equator crossing, and MISR observes only the sunlit side. NASA says that after inclination manoeuvres stopped in late 2020 the orbit drifted, so by autumn 2022 it was about 5 km lower and crossing the equator at 10:15.
  • L2 files carry an observation time (Time, ±30 s) plus year, month, day, hour and minute fields for each retrieval. When building daily means, distinguish UTC dates from local dates.
  • FIRSTLOOK is a provisional product processed quickly with ancillary data from an earlier period (the quality statement says the prior year); FINAL is the definitive product. The quality statement asks users to check whether the file name contains FIRSTLOOK.
  • MISR needs nine days for global coverage. Daily L3 files have many gaps, and the number of observations in monthly means varies strongly by region.

How to get the data

Example code

Run earthaccess.login() once with a NASA Earthdata account first. For data after October 2022, change short_name to MIL2ASAF and version to 002 (provisional).

# pip install earthaccess xarray netCDF4 numpy
import earthaccess
import xarray as xr

earthaccess.login()
results = earthaccess.search_data(
    short_name="MIL2ASAE", version="003",          # FINAL L2 aerosol V23, 4.4 km
    temporal=("2020-08-01", "2020-08-02"),
    bounding_box=(124, 33, 131, 39),               # around the Korean Peninsula (W, S, E, N)
)
files = earthaccess.download(results[:1], "./misr")

ds = xr.open_dataset(files[0], group="4.4_KM_PRODUCTS")
aod = ds["Aerosol_Optical_Depth"].where(ds["Aerosol_Optical_Depth"] > -9999)
print(float(aod.mean()), ds["Latitude"].shape)

Practical tips

  • After October 2022 only FIRSTLOOK (provisional) data exist. FIRSTLOOK uses ancillary data from an earlier period, and later orbits come from the new processing system (product version 30). State this when splicing a time series across 2022.
  • The quality statement says only Aerosol_Optical_Depth is Stage 3 validated, while particle properties (Ångström exponent, absorbing, non-spherical and size-resolved AOD) are Stage 2. Particle properties are more reliable when mid-visible AOD exceeds about 0.15.
  • Known issues: high AOD from unscreened clouds, thin cirrus (optical depth below 0.3) appearing as non-spherical particles, thick plumes screened as cloud, anomalously high values over snow and ice, and no retrievals above AOD 3.0.
  • Retrievals over Greenland and Antarctica are screened out of the user fields; the guidance is to look at the raw (_Raw) fields in the AUXILIARY group if needed.
  • Terra has drifted since late 2020, with an earlier equator crossing time and lower altitude. Orbits after October 2022 no longer line up with the fixed 233 WRS-2 paths, so finding the same location by path number may not work.
  • Because global coverage takes nine days, a location is not seen every day. When comparing monthly means with daily-global sensors such as MODIS, account for the difference in sampling.

Notices and change history

2026-03-20 · Warning · NASA projects the end of Terra science operations in February 2027

The editor's note in the NASA Science article 'Terra: The End of An Era' (published 2025-12-29, updated 2026-03-20) projects the end of Terra science operations in February 2027 because of fuel and power limits. The article also explains that after inclination adjustments stopped in late 2020, by autumn 2022 the orbit was about 5 km lower and crossing the equator at 10:15 instead of 10:30. The MISR record is tied to this schedule.

2023-11-06 · Critical · Terra orbit altitude change forces new MISR processing — FINAL L2 and L3 stop at 2022-10-12

ASDC states that the October 2022 change in Terra's orbit altitude meant orbit tracks no longer follow the fixed 233 WRS-2 paths, requiring a major update to MISR L1 and L2 production. Data from 2022-10-14 (orbit 121388) onward are processed with the updates; orbits from 126974 (2023-11-01) were released first and earlier ones are being filled in (the notice itself is undated). As checked in CMR on 2026-10-13, FINAL L2 (MIL2ASAE) and L3 have no data after 2022-10-12, while FIRSTLOOK L2 has been back-filled from 2022-10-13 and continues to the present.
