DUACS¶
SSALTO/DUACS multi-mission altimeter L4 gridded sea level (sea level anomaly, absolute dynamic topography, geostrophic currents) — Copernicus Marine SEALEVEL_GLO_PHY_L4_MY_008_047 (reprocessed) and SEALEVEL_GLO_PHY_L4_NRT_008_046 (near real time), C3S satellite-sea-level-global
Available
Current status
Operational. In November 2024 the full record was reprocessed with the DUACS DT-2024 standards; the Copernicus Marine products moved from a 0.25° to a 1/8° (0.125°) grid and switched their mapping method to MIOST. The C3S product (vDT2024) is the climate-oriented version, kept on a 0.25° grid with a steady two-satellite constellation; vDT2021 and vDT2018 are no longer extended. As of October 2026 no successor to DT-2024 has been announced.

NRT normally keeps only about the last two years online, so use MY or C3S for long-term work.
How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
Altimeter satellite gridded sea level anomalies (SLA), computed with respect to a twenty-year [1993, 2012] mean, produced by merging along-track measurements from all available altimeter missions (TOPEX/Poseidon, the Jason series, Sentinel-6 MF, Sentinel-3, SARAL/AltiKa and others) into gap-free daily global maps. The products also contain absolute dynamic topography (ADT = SLA + mean dynamic topography), surface geostrophic currents and formal mapping errors. They are generated by the DUACS system at CLS and distributed in two flavours: the Copernicus Marine products, which use every available satellite on a 0.125° grid and target mesoscale applications, and the C3S product, which uses a steady two-satellite constellation on a 0.25° grid for a homogeneous, stable record of climate-scale sea level change.
What changes with the successor¶
DUACS DT-2021 → DUACS DT-2024¶
Transition: 2024-11
Full reprocessing of the 30-year altimetry record with new L2P input standards and corrections. The Copernicus Marine products switched to MIOST mapping on a 1/8° grid; the C3S product keeps 0.25° optimal interpolation but adopts the new standards. The MDT changed to MDT_CNES_CLS22.
| Aspect | DUACS DT-2021 | DUACS DT-2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Processing version and file attributes | DT-2021 (e.g. product_version vDec2021, software_version 7.0_DUACS_DT2021_baseline) | DT-2024 (product_version vNov2024; MY software_version 8.0_MIOST_DT2024_baseline) |
| Copernicus Marine grid | 0.25° (…-l4-duacs-0.25deg_P1D) | 1/8° = 0.125° (…-l4-duacs-0.125deg_P1D); C3S stays at 0.25° |
| Mapping method | Optimal interpolation (OI) | Copernicus Marine — MIOST (Multiscale Inversion of Ocean Surface Topography); C3S — optimal interpolation retained |
| Ocean tide model | FES2014 (FES2022 from the 2023-11 myint datasets) | FES22b |
| Mean sea surface (MSS) | Hybrid SIO/CNES_CLS2015/DT15 (hybrid SIO2022/CNES_CLS2022 from the 2023-11 myint datasets) | Hybrid_2023 MSS (SIO, CNES/CLS22, DTU21) |
| Mean dynamic topography (MDT) for ADT | DT-2021 MDT | MDT_CNES_CLS22 (merged with the regional CMEMS_2020 MDT in the Mediterranean and Black Seas) — in NRT from 2024-11-06 |
| Reprocessed dataset IDs | cmems_obs-sl_glo_phy-ssh_my_allsat-l4-duacs-0.25deg_P1D (DT-2021) / …_myint_allsat-l4-duacs-0.25deg_P1D (added 2023-11) | cmems_obs-sl_glo_phy-ssh_my_allsat-l4-duacs-0.125deg_P1D / …0.125deg_P1M-m (version 202411) |
| Reported improvements | - | About 10% lower coastal errors (improved tide correction) and 5–7% lower mapping errors in energetic regions (MIOST) — CLS, EGU 2025 / NRT: mesoscale SLA errors reduced by about 20% in high-energy areas |
Things to watch when switching
- Do not combine DT-2021 and DT-2024 files in one time series; download the whole record from 1993 again in DT-2024.
- Scripts using the 0.25° dataset IDs (my, myint, nrt) must switch to the 0.125° IDs. The grid size changes, so rebuild any precomputed masks or regional indices.
- The new MDT changes the mean fields of ADT and the absolute geostrophic currents (ugos, vgos). Take care when comparing mean circulation with earlier results.
- From DT-2024 the C3S and Copernicus Marine products differ in mapping method (OI vs MIOST) and grid, so do not mix them or use one as a drop-in replacement for the other.

Available variables¶
Variable names as in the Copernicus Marine dataset metadata and the C3S Product User Guide (PUGS). MY and C3S daily files have the same variables; NRT has no tpa_correction. All variables are stored as int32 with a scale_factor of 0.0001. The MDT itself is not included in the files.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
A daily map is not an average of that day's observations. It is an estimate of sea level on that date, obtained by space–time mapping of along-track data from several weeks around it (MIOST for Copernicus Marine DT-2024, optimal interpolation for C3S). The time value is 00:00 UTC on the map date, and the file metadata give the coverage as 12:00 UTC on the previous day to 12:00 UTC on the map date. Monthly files are simple averages of the daily maps.
- C3S example: dt_global_twosat_phy_l4_20230910_vDT2024 has time_coverage_start 2023-09-09T12:00:00Z and time_coverage_end 2023-09-10T12:00:00Z (time units: days since 1950-01-01).
- Delayed-time (DT) maps use observations before and after the map date; NRT maps have no 'future' data and use only the preceding six weeks. NRT and MY values for the same date therefore differ.
- NRT produces three maps per day: a preliminary map at d0, an intermediate map at d0+3 and the final NRT map at d0+6, which replaces the preliminary one.
- Because of the temporal mapping, the effective time resolution is much coarser than one day: the QUID gives about 33 days for the global L4 product.
- Monthly files (Copernicus Marine …_P1M-m, C3S …-M01) are monthly means of the daily maps; Copernicus Marine stamps them with the first day of the month.

Practical tips¶
- The Copernicus Marine (allsat) maps use every satellite available at the time, which is best for mesoscale eddies, but the changing number of satellites makes the record less homogeneous over decades. C3S builds a separate climate product with a fixed two-satellite (twosat) constellation for long-term stability, so use C3S for global or regional mean sea level rise and long-term trends.
- The QUID states that NRT products should not be used for long-term signal analysis, because constellation changes can cause jumps or drifts. If you append recent NRT months to MY, check the differences over an overlap period first.
- DUACS L4 sea level is not corrected for glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Apply your own GIA correction where needed, e.g. for trends or comparisons with tide gauges or GRACE.
- Geostrophic currents derived from altimeter maps are usually weaker than in situ observations (QUID). Bear this in mind when comparing statistics such as eddy kinetic energy with other datasets.
- ADT is SLA plus the MDT, so a new MDT (MDT_CNES_CLS22 in DT-2024) also changes ADT and the absolute geostrophic currents. Do not mix files from different versions.
- Copernicus Marine datasets carry a version tag (e.g. reprocessed 202411, NRT 202506). You can pin it with the Toolbox's dataset_version argument; record the version you downloaded if reproducibility matters.
