MODIS NDVI/EVI (MOD13)

MODIS Vegetation Indices (MOD13Q1/A1/A2/A3/C1/C2, MYD13) Version 6.1 (NDVI and EVI, 250 m to 0.05°, 16-day and monthly)

Being replaced

Being replaced

Collection 6.1 (061) is still being produced (on 2026-10-13 the latest MOD13Q1 composite began on 2026-09-14 and MOD13A3 reached August 2026), but the satellites behind it are at the end of their lives. NASA has said MODIS data collection will stop when Terra and Aqua end operations in late 2026 or early 2027, followed by a final reprocessing, and advises users to move to comparable VIIRS products; NASA's Earth Observer projects the end of science operations in February 2027 for Terra and September 2027 for Aqua. Orbit drift is shifting overpass times and breaking the strict 16-day repeat, so plan new work around the VIIRS vegetation indices (VNP13, VJ113, VJ213) as well.

Coverage Global
Horizontal resolution MODIS sinusoidal tile grid (about 10°×10° at the equator): 250 m (Q1), 500 m (A1), 1 km (A2, A3) / global 0.05° latitude–longitude Climate Modeling Grid (CMG, 3600×7200; C1, C2)
Vertical resolution Single surface layer
Temporal resolution 16-day composites (Q1, A1, A2, C1) / calendar month (A3, C2). Terra and Aqua 16-day composites are offset by 8 days (Terra starting on days 1, 17, 33…, Aqua on days 9, 25, 41…), so using both satellites gives a quasi-8-day time series.
Update frequency 16-day composites added roughly 2–3 weeks after the period ends; monthly data after the month (to stop when Terra and Aqua end operations)

Note on period: Terra (MOD13) starts on 2000-02-18 and Aqua (MYD13) on 2002-07-04. A CMR check of the Korean tile (h28v05) on 2026-10-13 found the latest MOD13Q1 composite was 2026-09-14 to 29, the latest MYD13Q1 composite 2026-09-06 to 21, and the latest MOD13A3 month August 2026. MODIS data collection is expected to end when Terra and Aqua end operations.

How to read the resolution
  • Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
  • Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
  • Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
  • The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.

Overview

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) computed from MODIS surface reflectance and composited over 16 days and calendar months. NDVI continues the NOAA AVHRR NDVI record, while EVI uses the blue band to reduce atmospheric effects and saturates less over dense vegetation. Six resolution/period combinations run from 250 m to a 0.05° global grid, and the files also carry reflectances (red, NIR, blue, MIR), view geometry, composite day and quality information. It is one of the most widely used satellite vegetation datasets for phenology, drought, crop and land-change studies.

What changes with the successor

MODIS Vegetation Indices C6.1 (MOD13, MYD13) → VIIRS Vegetation Indices V2 (VNP13, VJ113, VJ213) Planned

Transition: 2027

The successor carries the MODIS vegetation index system over to VIIRS. CV-MVC compositing, NDVI and EVI continue, but there is no 250 m product, a different blue band weakens EVI continuity, and the two-band EVI2 has been added. Fill values, scale notation, pixel-reliability classes and file format differ, so code must be updated. MODIS collection ends with Terra and Aqua (late 2026 to 2027).

Aspect MODIS Vegetation Indices C6.1 (MOD13, MYD13) VIIRS Vegetation Indices V2 (VNP13, VJ113, VJ213)
Satellites and overpass time Terra (originally 10:30 descending) and Aqua (originally 13:30 ascending), both drifting Suomi NPP (2012–, distribution to end November 2026), NOAA-20 (2018–) and NOAA-21 (2023–), 13:30 ascending. No product continues Terra's morning observations
Product resolutions 250 m (Q1), 500 m (A1), 1 km (A2, A3), 0.05° (C1, C2) 500 m (A1), 1 km (A2, A3), 0.05° (C1, C2) — no 250 m product
16-day composite spacing Every 16 days per satellite (Terra and Aqua offset by 8 days, quasi-8-day together) 16-day composites produced every 8 days for each satellite (periods overlap by 8 days)
Indices NDVI, EVI NDVI, EVI, EVI2 (two-band red/NIR, computed without the blue band)
Compositing CV-MVC — smallest view angle of the two highest-NDVI observations CV-MVC — smallest view angle among the top two-thirds of observations by NDVI, plus view-angle bins ([0–30°], [>30°]) to avoid large view angles
Blue band MODIS band 3, 459–479 nm VIIRS M3, 478–498 nm — EVI is sensitive to the blue band, weakening continuity with MODIS EVI (hence EVI2)
Reflectance layers Red, NIR, blue, MIR (bands 1, 2, 3, 7) Red, NIR, blue, green, SWIR1, SWIR2, SWIR3
Stored values and quality layer (500 m 16-day) Scale 0.0001, index fill −3000 and valid −2000 to 10000, pixel reliability 0–3 (fill −1) Scale given as 10000 (divide by 10000), index fill −15000 and valid −10000 to 10000, pixel reliability 0–11 (fill −4)
Layer names and file format 250m 16 days NDVI etc., HDF-EOS2 (HDF4) 500 m 16 days NDVI etc. (space between number and m), HDF-EOS5 (HDF5)

Things to watch when switching

  • Analyses that need 250 m (small fields, urban green space) cannot be continued at that resolution with VIIRS. Compare at a common 500 m.
  • Long EVI series may show a seam because of the blue-band difference, so consider NDVI or EVI2 first when joining the two sensors.
  • Fill values, scale notation and pixel-reliability classes differ, so do not reuse MODIS quality-filter code as is.
  • Suomi NPP products (VNP13) stop being distributed in November 2026, so the reference going forward is NOAA-21 (VJ213, primary) and NOAA-20 (VJ113, secondary).

Available variables

From LP DAAC collection information (MOD13Q1 and MOD13A3 V061) and the MOD13 User's Guide. Layer (SDS) names are prefixed with the resolution and period (250m 16 days … for the 250 m 16-day product, 1 km monthly … for the 1 km monthly). The 500 m and 1 km 16-day and CMG products use different prefixes, so check names in your files. Index and reflectance values are int16 and are multiplied by 0.0001.

Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show

The 16-day products use the Constrained-View angle Maximum Value Composite (CV-MVC): of the clear observations in 16 days, the two with the highest NDVI are compared and the one closer to nadir (smaller view angle) is chosen, and that day's NDVI, EVI, reflectances and angles are written out (a plain maximum value composite is the fallback when clear observations are scarce). The monthly products (A3, C2) are a weighted average of the 16-day composites overlapping the month, weighted by the length of overlap. The file date is the first day (day of year) of the compositing period.

  • A 16-day value is the observation from one selected day, not a period mean. The actual observation day is stored as a day of year in the 250m 16 days composite day of the year layer; use it for phenology work where dates matter.
  • Since Collection 5, Terra and Aqua 16-day composites are processed 8 days out of phase. In 2024, for example, MOD13Q1 composites start on days 1, 17, 33 and MYD13Q1 on days 9, 25, 41. Alternating the two gives an 8-day spacing, but each value is still a 16-day composite.
  • Compositing restarts on 1 January each year, so the last composite of a year (e.g. starting 19 December and ending 3 January) overlaps the first composite of the next year.
  • Terra originally crossed at 10:30 descending and Aqua at 13:30 ascending, but since orbit maintenance ended Terra has drifted to earlier mornings and Aqua to later afternoons, so solar elevation and shadowing at overpass change from year to year.
  • From C6 the input to the 16-day compositing is not daily data but surface reflectance already composited over 8 days (L2G, choosing the minimum-blue observation to reduce aerosol).

How to get the data

  • NASA Earthdata Search (LP DAAC, Earthdata Cloud) — Web search and HTTPS download / earthaccess
    • The link opens MOD13Q1 V061. Short names are MOD13Q1, MOD13A1, MOD13A2, MOD13A3, MOD13C1, MOD13C2 (Terra) and MYD13… (Aqua), version 061; files are HDF-EOS2 (.hdf). LP DAAC Data Pool distribution of MODIS data ended on 30 June 2025, so scripts that used Data Pool URLs should switch to Earthdata Cloud (for example via earthaccess).
  • AppEEARS (area and point extraction) — Web and API — area (GeoTIFF, NetCDF4) or point (CSV) extraction with optional reprojection
    • Delivers just your region without handling tiles or the sinusoidal projection, along with quality-bit lookup tables.
  • LAADS DAAC (MOD13 product page) — HTTPS download
    • Distribution point on the MODIS processing system (MODAPS) side; the file specifications (filespec) are also here.

Example code

Downloads Terra (MOD13Q1) and Aqua (MYD13Q1) 16-day NDVI for 2024 with earthaccess to build an 8-day-spaced series for the central Korean tile (h28v05). The files are HDF4, so pyhdf is used, and only pixel reliability 0 and 1 are kept. The actual observation day of each value is in the composite day of the year layer.

    )
    files += earthaccess.download(res, "./mod13q1")

for f in sorted(map(str, files), key=lambda p: p.split(".A")[1][:7]):
    if ".h28v05." not in f:
        continue
    sd = SD(f, SDC.READ)
    ndvi = sd.select("250m 16 days NDVI")[:].astype("float32")
    rel = sd.select("250m 16 days pixel reliability")[:]
    ndvi = np.where((ndvi >= -2000) & (rel <= 1), ndvi * 0.0001, np.nan)
    print(f.split("/")[-1][:24], "mean NDVI:", round(float(np.nanmean(ndvi)), 3))

Practical tips

  • NDVI and EVI are stored as int16. Multiply by 0.0001 and remove the fill value −3000 and anything outside the valid range (−2000 to 10000) first. The reflectance fill is −1000 and angles are × 0.01.
  • pixel reliability (0 good, 1 marginal, 2 snow/ice, 3 cloudy) is the simplest quality screen. For finer screening use bits 0–1 (quality), 2–5 (usefulness), 6–7 (aerosol), 8 (adjacent cloud), 10 (mixed clouds), 14 (snow/ice) and 15 (shadow) of VI Quality.
  • A 16-day value can come from any day in the period. For day-level spring and autumn phenology (green-up and senescence dates), use composite day of the year rather than the file date.
  • Mixing Terra and Aqua into an 8-day series alternates the overpass time (morning/afternoon) and sensor calibration. Do trend analysis with one satellite's product, and say so if you mix them.
  • Because of orbit drift, neither satellite keeps a strict 16-day repeat any more (LP DAAC), and pixel-size and scan-gap effects grew from late 2024 (LDOPE). Cross-check small trends after the mid-2020s against the VIIRS vegetation indices.
  • The monthly products (A3, C2) are weighted averages of 16-day composites, so their values behave differently from the 16-day data. If you need monthly maximum NDVI, derive it from the 16-day data yourself.
  • The CMG (0.05°) products average clear 1 km pixels spatially and fill fully cloudy cells from past data. Values with pixel reliability 4 (estimated from the historical time series) are not observations and are safest left out.
  • Korea spans several sinusoidal tiles, including h28v05 and h29v05, so AppEEARS or GDAL is the easier route for point extraction and reprojection.

2021-11-10 · Info · Aqua orbit drift plan — the 16-day repeat cycle is no longer strictly kept

LP DAAC explained that Aqua began drifting toward later afternoons in July 2021 and would reach an overpass time of about 15:50 around August 2026. Products are expected to stay mostly science quality, but the lower altitude reduces grid size, the strict 16-day repeat is lost, and lower sun angles can mean more shadows.
