PERSIANN-CDR¶
Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks – Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR)
Available
Current status
Updated quarterly as a NOAA CDR. When checked on 2026-10-13, the latest file on NCEI THREDDS and in the AWS bucket was for 2026-03-31 (created 2026-07-09); the record extends about 3–4 months behind real time as input data become available. The current version is v01r01 (Version 1 Revision 1).

Note on period: The NCEI metadata give a start of 1983-01-01 (the product page says "1982–present"), and the user guide explains that 1980–1982 is incomplete while GridSat-B1 quality work continues. February 1992 is unusable because of bad input data (11–25 February). When checked on 2026-10-13, the last data date was 2026-03-31.
How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
PERSIANN-CDR is a 0.25° daily precipitation climate data record: geostationary IR (about 11 µm) brightness temperatures are converted to rain rates by an artificial neural network (PERSIANN), then bias-adjusted to monthly GPCP precipitation. Because it runs consistently from the 1980s, when microwave observations were scarce, it offers more than 30 years of high-resolution satellite precipitation and is widely used for studies of long-term changes in extremes, droughts and floods. CHRS also runs the real-time PERSIANN, PERSIANN-CCS and PDIR-Now products and the 4-km, 3-hourly PERSIANN-CCS-CDR record.
Available variables¶
Variables in the NCEI files (netCDF4, CF-1.6). Missing data are marked with missing_value -9999.0 and _FillValue -1.0; there is no scale_factor. The chunk sizes in the file attributes (1, 1440, 480) suggest the array is stored as (time, lon, lat), so check the axis order before plotting maps.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
The variable precipitation is the precipitation amount accumulated over one day (00:00–23:59 UTC), in mm with cell_methods "sum". Each file holds one day; the first date in the file name is the data date and the second, prefixed with c, is the creation date. time is in 'days since 1979-01-01 00:00:00'.
- Days are UTC, i.e. 09:00 to 09:00 the next day in Korea Standard Time. The user guide warns that UTC daily totals can mismatch gauge totals reported for local-time days, especially in heavy rain.
- 3-hourly IR estimates are scaled by ratio to monthly GPCP totals, so monthly sums track GPCP while the day-to-day distribution follows the IR signal.
- Updates are quarterly and only the final record is published. For real-time needs, use CHRS PERSIANN or PDIR-Now, and state that they are different datasets.

How to get the data¶
- NOAA NCEI (direct HTTPS download) — HTTPS download (no account)
- One file per day in yearly folders. NCEI warns of possible access delays during its October 2026 cloud migration.
- NCEI THREDDS (OPeNDAP and aggregation) — THREDDS / OPeNDAP — spatial and temporal subsetting, full-period aggregation (Best Time Series)
- AWS S3 public bucket (NOAA Open Data Dissemination) — S3 (us-east-1, anonymous access) / HTTPS
- Laid out as s3://noaa-cdr-precip-persiann-pds/data/YYYY/PERSIANN-CDR_v01r01_YYYYMMDD_cYYYYMMDD.nc.
- Google Cloud Storage — Public GCS bucket

- PERSIANN, PERSIANN-CCS, PERSIANN-CDR, PDIR-Now and PERSIANN-CCS-CDR can be chosen from the same interface.
Example code¶
Downloads daily data for July 2023 from the public AWS bucket without an account and computes the monthly total over the Korean Peninsula (requires s3fs, xarray and h5netcdf). Longitudes are 0–360°.
import s3fs
import xarray as xr
fs = s3fs.S3FileSystem(anon=True)
paths = sorted(fs.glob("noaa-cdr-precip-persiann-pds/data/2023/PERSIANN-CDR_v01r01_202307*.nc"))
ds = xr.open_mfdataset([fs.open(p) for p in paths], engine="h5netcdf", combine="by_coords")
pr = ds["precipitation"].transpose("time", "lat", "lon") # mm/day (00–24 UTC)
pr = pr.where(pr >= 0) # drop -1 and -9999 missing values
box = pr.sel(lat=slice(33, 39), lon=slice(124, 132)) # use slice(39, 33) if latitude is descending
print(box.sum("time").mean(["lat", "lon"]).values, "mm (July 2023)")
Practical tips¶
- Being IR-based (cloud-top temperature), it misses warm rain from clouds with warm tops and can report rain under non-raining cirrus. The user guide states these limitations explicitly.
- Microwave data enter only indirectly, through the monthly GPCP adjustment. Day-to-day patterns follow the IR signal, so timing and location errors can be large for short heavy-rain events.
- According to the file attributes, the monthly GPCP input for bias adjustment is GPCP v2.3. NOAA released GPCP V3.3 as a new CDR in 2025 and marked V2.3 as superseded, so the status of GPCP updates may affect PERSIANN-CDR latency.
- February 1992 is unusable, and before 1997 there is an Indian Ocean gap in the underlying ISCCP B1 data. The early 1980s are also under GridSat-B1 quality work, so check these periods separately when looking at long-term trends.
- Each file has two missing-value codes (-9999 missing_value and -1 _FillValue). xarray masks only one automatically, so treat all negative values as missing.
- Do not confuse it with its sibling products. PERSIANN (0.25°, real time), PERSIANN-CCS (4 km), PDIR-Now (near real time, dynamic IR–rain rate) and PERSIANN-CCS-CDR (0.04°, 3-hourly climate record) are separate datasets available from the CHRS Data Portal.
- Days are bounded in UTC, nine hours off from Korean station daily totals (KST). For daily validation, align the dates or compare at monthly scale.
Notices and change history¶
2026-10-02 · Info · Data Access Delays — NCEI cloud migration (through 2026-11-30)
NCEI is moving its data and applications to the cloud, which may temporarily delay access (2026-10-02 to 11-30). The PERSIANN-CDR product page carries a cloud-migration notice as well. Downloading from the AWS or Google Cloud buckets is less affected.
