SMOS sea surface salinity (ESA, CATDS, BEC)¶
ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Sea Surface Salinity — ESA Level 2 Ocean Salinity (L2OS v700), CATDS Level 3/Level 4 fields (CPDC operational L3OS, CEC LOCEAN debiased L3 v11, CEC LOPS SMOS/SMAP OI L4) and BEC global L3/L4
Available
Current status
SMOS has been observing since its launch in November 2009. The ESA mission page (earth.esa.int) still says operations were extended "until the end of 2025", but ESA's presentation at the May 2026 ocean salinity meeting and the meeting report state that SMOS is "currently extended until end of 2028", and the CNES project page (edited 2026-01) says "extended to 2026 (2028 envisaged)". When checked on 2026-10-13, CATDS operational L3OS 10-day fields ran through the 2026-09-28 to 10-07 window (posted 10-13), so updates continue normally. The current ESA L2OS version is v700 (operational since 2021-05); ESA has announced v740 as the fourth mission reprocessing baseline ("as of end-2025") and v750 with an ice contamination correction for 2027.

How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
SMOS is an ESA Earth Explorer that measures soil moisture and sea surface salinity with an L-band (1.4 GHz) interferometric synthetic-aperture radiometer (MIRAS), and it holds the longest satellite salinity record, starting in 2010. ESA produces swath-level Level 2 salinity (L2OS). The French CATDS grids it into the operational L3OS on EASE-Grid 2.0 (updated daily), a research-grade debiased L3 (LOCEAN) and an OI L4 merged with SMAP, while the Spanish BEC builds global L3/L4 fields with its own method for reducing land and radio-frequency interference contamination. Climate studies mostly use the carefully debiased CATDS LOCEAN and BEC products, and monitoring of recent conditions mostly uses the CATDS operational L3OS.
What changes with the successor¶
ESA SMOS L2OS v662 → ESA SMOS L2OS v700¶
Transition: 2021-05
The third mission reprocessing baseline. The anomaly reference changed to a SMOS-derived climatology, a new dielectric model improves retrievals in cold water, and the land–sea contamination correction now uses ISAS-15 reference fields.
| Aspect | ESA SMOS L2OS v662 | ESA SMOS L2OS v700 |
|---|---|---|
| Anomaly (SSS_anom) reference | WOA2009 climatology | SMOS-derived climatology (2013–2019), with some systematic biases corrected |
| Seawater dielectric model | Klein–Swift | Somaraju–Trumpf (ST) — better cold-water retrievals |
| Land–sea contamination reference fields | WOA | ISAS-15, with stricter RFI filtering |
| Input L1C | Previous L1 baseline | L1C brightness temperatures v724 |
| Period split | v662 reprocessed and operational data | REPR v700 2010-06-01 to 2021-05-24, OPER v700 from 2021-05-25 |
Things to watch when switching
- Do not mix v662 time series with v700. The anomaly reference and dielectric model changed, so values differ for the same dates.
- The v700 release note lists known issues: seasonal biases at southern high latitudes, negative biases of about -0.5 pss or more on ascending passes, and ascending–descending differences.
- ESA has announced the next mission reprocessing baseline v740 (as of end-2025) and v750 with an ice contamination correction (2027). Download the data again once a new baseline is distributed.

CATDS LOCEAN debiased L3 v10 → CATDS LOCEAN debiased L3 v11¶
Transition: 2026-08
Keeps the v10 debiasing method, adds a Southern Ocean ice-vicinity bias correction and extends the record to December 2025. The products are experimental and updated yearly.
| Aspect | CATDS LOCEAN debiased L3 v10 | CATDS LOCEAN debiased L3 v11 |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Ocean ice-vicinity bias | Not corrected | Corrected up to about 800 km from the ice edge |
| Period | v10 period (released before 2025) | 2010-01 to 2025-12 |
| Citation DOI | 10.17882/52804#120028 (Boutin et al., 2025, debias V10.0) | 10.17882/52804#133087 (Boutin et al., 2026, debias V11.0) |
Things to watch when switching
- Do not mix v10 and v11 in one time series; replace the full record with v11. Southern Ocean values change the most.
- In papers, give the version and the SEANOE DOI with its version anchor (#133087).

Available variables¶
ESA L2OS variable names follow the L2OS v700 release note, CATDS L3OS names follow the CATDS L3/L4 OS ATBD (Table 10), and LOCEAN variables follow the v11 documentation. Salinity in pss is practical salinity. In CATDS L3OS names, the suffix _1 marks rain-corrected "bulk" salinity and _2 salinity without rain correction.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
ESA L2OS values are instantaneous swath retrievals, and ascending and descending passes have different bias characteristics. The CATDS operational L3OS 10-day product is a 10-day running mean produced every day, with the start and end of the averaging window in the file name; the monthly product averages a calendar month. LOCEAN debiased v11 consists of maps produced every 4 days with Gaussian weighting of 9-day and 18-day full width at half maximum (FWHM).
- Example CATDS L3OS 10-day file name: SM_OPER_MIR_CSQ3A__20260928T000000_20261007T235959_343_002_7.tgz — an average over 2026-09-28 to 10-07, processor version 343, A for the 25 km grid (B for 50 km). Files in the same folder whose start and end span a month are the monthly product.
- Each CATDS L3OS .tgz holds a header file (.HDR) and a data file (.DBL.nc, NetCDF3). In 1-day-delay files, MIR in the name is replaced by NRT.
- CATDS L2Q daily files (MIR_CSF2QA, MIR_CSF2QD) hold that day's valid retrievals for ascending (A) and descending (D) passes separately. Check the difference between the two before combining them.
- Neighbouring LOCEAN v11 9-day maps overlap heavily and are not independent samples. The 18-day product is less noisy but has coarser time resolution.
- ESA L2OS files are half orbits of about 50 minutes of pole-to-pole sensing (29 a day). The file name distinguishes OPER (current baseline) and REPR (reprocessed) data.
instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time

Practical tips¶
- ESA strongly recommends filtering L2OS with the procedure in the release note (reject Fg_ctrl_ecmwf or Fg_sc_low_wind equal to 0, reject flags for RFI, ice, sun glint and others equal to 1, keep only Dg_af_fov > 130). Applying all of it removes many grid points, and the note allows relaxing some criteria.
- L2OS v700 still has ascending–descending differences, and biases and noise grow south of 50°S and near sea ice. For long-term analyses, the CATDS LOCEAN and BEC gridded products, which correct these systematic biases, are better choices.
- ESA advises against using January to May 2010 commissioning data. Start time series in June 2010 or later.
- The LOCEAN documentation notes that residual biases remain near coasts and dynamic river plumes even after land–sea correction. When studying coastal plumes such as the Changjiang diluted water in the East China Sea, always compare with in situ data.
- The CATDS operational L3OS is updated daily, but its high-latitude ice correction is imperfect and residual RFI may remain. The research-grade LOCEAN v11 ends in December 2025, so check the differences between the two products before appending recent data.
- For the Arctic, CATDS has produced the operational ARCTIC L3G (9-day) since April 2026, and the research CEC ARCTIC V2 runs to 2023-08-30. CATDS recommends using V2 where available and filling recent periods with L3G.
- LOCEAN's eSSS is only a qualitative error indicator and is unrealistically small near coasts. Do not use it as a quantitative uncertainty.
