NCEP–DOE R2

NCEP/DOE AMIP-II Reanalysis (Reanalysis-2)

Update delayed

Update delayed

There has been no official end-of-production notice, but as of 2026-10-11 both PSL and NCAR stop at 18 UTC on 28 February 2026, with no update for more than seven months. The NCEP cdas2 directories that carried the real-time extension of R2 (CDAS2) are among the paths listed for removal in the CDAS-to-CORe upgrade notice effective 9 March 2026 (SCN 26-12), so R2 has most likely ended in practice, as R1 did. If you need recent months, plan to switch to another reanalysis.

Note on period: 1 January 1979 to 28 February 2026, 18 UTC (PSL 2026 files and NCAR d091000, checked 2026-10-11). The dataset is still labelled "1979–present", but nothing after February 2026 has been added. The NOAA NCEI archive copy stopped ingesting in September 2005 (monthly means in March 2006).

How to read the resolution
  • Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
  • Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
  • Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
  • The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.

Overview

The NCEP/DOE AMIP-II Reanalysis (Reanalysis-2) is a follow-on to the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis (R1), rerun from 1979 to fix known R1 processing errors and update the parameterizations of physical processes. It keeps R1's resolution (T62, 28 levels) and observing system, so it was presented as an updated NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis rather than a next-generation reanalysis. Its soil moisture, surface fluxes and water budget are better than R1's, which made it popular for land-surface and hydrological work and for checking results obtained with R1.

What changed from the previous dataset

Available variables

Main variables from the NOAA PSL netCDF files (OPeNDAP attributes). Names are the variable names inside the files; the PSL directory and file-name pattern are given in brackets. Names resemble R1, but the directory (gaussian_grid) and some file names (mslp) differ.

Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show

Pressure-level and surface analysis variables (air, hgt, mslp, pr_wtr, etc.) are instantaneous values at the time stamp (00, 06, 12, 18 UTC). Precipitation, heat fluxes and radiation in the gaussian_grid directory are 6-hourly means, and because the PSL files define time as the start of the averaging interval (coordinate_defines 'start'), the 00 UTC value is the forecast mean over 00–06 UTC. In the same directory, 2 m temperature and humidity, 10 m wind and soil moisture are 6-hour forecast values, not means.

  • PSL file attributes: averaged variables carry statistic 'Mean', cell_methods 'time: mean' and avg_period '06:00:00'; instantaneous ones carry statistic 'Individual Obs'.
  • Precipitation prate is a mean rate (Kg/m^2/s), not an accumulation. Multiply by 21600 for 6-hour precipitation (mm) and by 86400 for a daily total.
  • The 2 m and 10 m variables and soilw have long_names beginning '6-Hourly Forecast of …'. The PSL files do not say whether the forecast valid time equals the time stamp, so check the original GRIB files (NCAR d091000) if you need exact timing.
  • Daily means (ncep.reanalysis2.dailyavgs) average the four values of each day; monthly means (ncep.reanalysis2.derived) average the month.

instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time

Pressure levels (pressure/, 2.5°, 17 levels)

Variable Short name Units Time convention Notes
Air temperature air degK instantaneous
Geopotential height hgt m instantaneous
Zonal and meridional wind uwnd, vwnd m/s instantaneous
Omega (vertical velocity in pressure coordinates) omega Pascal/s instantaneous
Relative humidity rhum % instantaneous

Surface and entire atmosphere (surface/, 2.5°)

Variable Short name Units Time convention Notes
Mean sea level pressure mslp Pascals instantaneous
Surface pressure pres Pascals instantaneous file pres.sfc
Precipitable water for entire atmosphere pr_wtr kg/m^2 instantaneous file pr_wtr.eatm

Near-surface and fluxes (gaussian_grid/, T62 Gaussian, 6-hourly forecasts and means)

Variable Short name Units Time convention Notes
Air temperature at 2 m air degK instantaneous (6-hour) file air.2m.gauss · 6-hour forecast value (long_name '6-Hourly Forecast of Air temperature at 2 m'). The PSL attribute statistic is 'Mean', but there is no cell_methods or avg_period, so it is classed here as an instantaneous forecast value.
Specific humidity at 2 m shum kg/kg instantaneous (6-hour) file shum.2m.gauss · 6-hour forecast value (statistic 'Individual Obs')
Zonal wind at 10 m uwnd m/s instantaneous (6-hour) file uwnd.10m.gauss · 6-hour forecast value (statistic 'Individual Obs')
Precipitation rate at surface (6-hourly mean) prate Kg/m^2/s 6-hour mean
Latent heat net flux lhtfl W/m^2 6-hour mean
Sensible heat net flux shtfl W/m^2 6-hour mean
Volumetric soil moisture between 0–10 cm below ground level soilw fraction instantaneous (6-hour) file soilw.0-10cm.gauss · 6-hour forecast value (statistic 'Individual Obs'). The file also carries cell_methods 'time: mean', so its attributes are inconsistent.
Upward longwave radiation flux at the nominal top of atmosphere (OLR) ulwrf W/m^2 6-hour mean file ulwrf.ntat.gauss

How to get the data

Example code

The PSL OPeNDAP URLs open directly in xarray. Note that sea-level pressure is mslp, not slp as in R1.

import xarray as xr

base = "https://psl.noaa.gov/thredds/dodsC/Datasets/ncep.reanalysis2"
mslp = xr.open_dataset(f"{base}/surface/mslp.2025.nc")["mslp"]       # Pa
t2m = xr.open_dataset(f"{base}/gaussian_grid/air.2m.gauss.2025.nc")["air"]  # degK, Gaussian grid
print(mslp.mean("time"), t2m.mean("time"))

Practical tips

  • The R2 developers advised treating it as an updated R1 to use alongside it, not as a next-generation replacement. Higher resolution, direct radiance assimilation and proper use of SSM/I data were never added.
  • A CPC notice explains that "Version C" cloud temperatures were set to zero rather than undefined in cloud-free regions, biasing monthly-mean cloud temperatures and cloud top and base pressures low (total cloud cover tcdc is unaffected). Check the notice before using any cloud field.
  • The NCAR Climate Data Guide still classes R2 as a first-generation reanalysis and lists low moisture variability over the oceans and a poor Southern Hemisphere among its limitations.
  • There are no data after February 2026, so scripts that fetch "the latest month" may simply stop without raising an error. Check the last time step you actually received.

Notices and change history

2026-02-09 · Warning · NWS SCN 26-12 — Upgrading CDAS to CORe effective March 9, 2026; CDAS data files, including the cdas2 paths, no longer available

The notice states that "the data files for CDAS will no longer be available as of March 9, 2026", listing the NOMADS and FTP /com/cdas2/ directories. It does not mention R2 by name, but the R2 data at PSL and NCAR stop just before then, on 28 February 2026 (checked 2026-10-11).
