CCMP V3.1

RSS Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform (CCMP) Ocean Vector Wind Analysis, Version 3.1

Available

Current status

V3.1 is the current version and RSS updates it roughly monthly. When checked on 2026-10-13, both the RSS server and PO.DAAC held data through 31 August 2026 (posted 2026-09-17, a lag of about 2–7 weeks). V3.0 (2023-02) and V2.0 are no longer updated, and the near-real-time product (v02.1.NRT), available within a few days, is a separate dataset with a different background field and processing.

Item Details
Section Satellite › Ocean surface wind (also listed in: Ocean › Satellite products)
Type Observation-based analysis
Domains Ocean, Atmosphere, Remote sensing
Provider Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) / NASA PO.DAAC (netCDF redistribution, NASA MEaSUREs)
Period 1993-01 ~ present
Coverage Quasi-global — 80°S–80°N, intended for ice-free oceans. Values also exist over land, but RSS advises against using them
Horizontal resolution 0.25° × 0.25° latitude–longitude grid (file dimensions 720 latitudes × 1440 longitudes, coordinates at cell centres). RSS and PO.DAAC describe the coverage as 80°S–80°N
Vertical resolution 10 m equivalent neutral-stability wind over the sea surface
Temporal resolution 6-hourly analyses (00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC; four maps per daily file) / monthly means (L4.5, with anomalies relative to the 1995–2014 climatology)
Update frequency RSS updates roughly monthly (August 2026 data posted 2026-09-17). PO.DAAC states an expected latency of 2–3 months for new files. Each update omits the last day of the month, which is filled in at the next update
Licence CC BY 4.0 (RSS CCMP page). Include the acknowledgement statement, and RSS asks to be told about publications (support@remss.com)
Account required No

Note on period: V3.x starts in January 1993 because the OSCAR ocean current product used to adjust the ERA5 winds begins in 1993. The 'Temporal Coverage' field on the RSS product page (1993-01-02 to 2019-12-30) and the text (1993-01 to 2023-07) have not been updated; when checked on 2026-10-13, files actually ran through 2026-08-31. The previous V2.0 started in July 1987.

How to read the resolution
  • Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
  • Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
  • Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
  • The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.

Overview

A Level 4 product that inter-calibrates wind speeds from microwave radiometers (SSM/I, SSMIS, AMSR-E, AMSR2, TMI, GMI, WindSat) and wind vectors from scatterometers (QuikSCAT, ASCAT), then blends them with adjusted ERA5 10 m neutral winds as the background using a variational analysis method (VAM), giving gap-free 6-hourly 0.25° ocean vector wind fields. It was originally developed at NASA GSFC (Atlas et al., 2011) and has been produced by RSS since V2.0. V3.0 switched the background from ERA-Interim to ERA5 and improved high-wind accuracy and long-term stability; V3.1 adds AMSR2 V8.2 and ASCAT-B from July 2012 onward and allows low-latency updates. It is widely used to force ocean circulation models, to compute wind stress and stress curl, and to evaluate reanalysis winds.

What changes with the successor

CCMP V2.0 → CCMP V3.0

Transition: 2023-02

The background changed from ERA-Interim to adjusted ERA5 neutral winds, buoy assimilation was dropped, GMI was added, and radiometer winds and ERA5 were adjusted before the analysis. The record now starts in 1993 instead of 1987, with better high-wind accuracy and long-term stability.

Aspect CCMP V2.0 CCMP V3.0
Background field ERA-40 and ERA-Interim 10 m winds (no adjustment) ERA5 10 m neutral-stability winds + OSCAR current adjustment, wind-speed distribution matched to scatterometers, seasonal and regional vector corrections
Period 1987-07 onward (the v02.0 folder on the RSS server stops in 2019) 1993-01 onward (start of the OSCAR current record)
Satellite inputs Radiometers SSM/I, SSMIS, AMSR-E, WindSat, TMI, AMSR2; scatterometers QuikSCAT, ASCAT-A V2.0 inputs + GMI
Buoy data Moored buoy winds (TAO, TRITON, PIRATA, RAMA, NDBC and others) assimilated Not assimilated; kept for independent validation
Radiometer wind adjustment None Small regional corrections, largest for 19 GHz instruments (SSM/I, SSMIS)
Monthly anomaly baseline V2.0 climatology 1995–2014 climatology

Things to watch when switching

  • Do not splice V2.0 and V3.x into one time series. Where there are no observations, values differ by the difference between backgrounds.
  • V2.0 assimilated buoys, which left artificial structures around buoy sites that stood out in derivatives such as stress curl. V3.x does not have this problem, but buoy comparisons are no longer comparisons with assimilated data.
  • Only V2.0 covers the years before 1993, so studies using that period should state the version clearly and check differences from V3.x separately.

CCMP V3.0 → CCMP V3.1

Transition: 2023-08

Same processing system, with inputs changed only from July 2012 onward. Adding AMSR2 V8.2 and ASCAT-B improves winds after that date, and using near-real-time OSCAR lets the record be extended continuously with low latency.

Aspect CCMP V3.0 CCMP V3.1
Period 1993-01 to 2019 (planned to be extended, but superseded by V3.1) 1993-01 to present (updated roughly monthly)
ERA5 pre-adjustment OSCAR currents OSCAR025-nrt (near-real-time) from 2021-01
Scatterometer inputs QuikSCAT, ASCAT-A QuikSCAT, ASCAT-A (V2.1.1 after 2016, ended 2021-11), ASCAT-B (full mission from 2012-12-13)
AMSR2 V8.0 V8.2 (full mission from 2012-07-02)
Values before 2012-07-02 V3.0 Identical to V3.0

Things to watch when switching

  • Values from July 2012 onward differ from V3.0, so do not mix results produced with V3.0 and V3.1. Earlier values are the same.
  • The citation DOIs on the RSS page are still labelled Version 3.0. In papers, state the version you actually used (V03.1 in the file names).

Available variables

Variable names follow the CCMP V3.1 User Guide and the PO.DAAC variable list. All winds are 10 m neutral-stability winds; u and v are relative to true north and the direction follows the oceanographic convention (the direction the wind blows toward).

Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show

Values in the 6-hourly files are analyses valid at 00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC. Each combines satellite observations within the 6-hour assimilation window around that time with the ERA5 background, and where there are no observations the adjusted ERA5 value remains. Monthly files are averages of the 6-hourly analyses in the month.

  • Each daily file has a time dimension of length 4 (00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC), with time in 'hours since 1987-01-01 00:00:00'.
  • nobs is the number of satellites assimilated at that grid cell within the 6-hour window. A value of 0 means no satellite observations, so only the adjusted ERA5 background remains.
  • Satellites pass only a few times a day, so many analysis times in the tropics and low latitudes have no observations. Use nobs to separate observation-based values from background values.
  • In the monthly files, u and v are vector averages while w (wind speed) is a scalar average, so w is larger than √(u²+v²). Anomalies (*_anom) are relative to the 1995–2014 climatology.
  • The near-real-time product (v02.1.NRT, files named CCMP_RT_…) appears within a day or two, but it uses a different background and inputs from V3.1, so do not mix it with the final V3.1 record.

obs_based = ws.where(ds["nobs"].sel(latitude=slice(30, 40), longitude=slice(120, 135)) > 0)
print(ws.mean("time").values.mean(), float(obs_based.count() / ws.count()))

Practical tips

  • Cells with nobs = 0 hold only the adjusted ERA5 background, with no satellite observations. If your analysis is about what the satellites add, filter with nobs.
  • Small, intense wind features such as typhoons and other tropical cyclones are poorly resolved in ERA5, and satellite retrievals are often lost to rain, so RSS says not to use CCMP to analyse these events.
  • Above about 15–18 m/s, CCMP is intentionally biased high relative to buoys and ASCAT-C (reflecting high-wind calibration of scatterometers and radiometers). Keep this in mind when comparing with buoys.
  • Multi-decadal trends in global or basin-mean wind speed can be comparable to the dataset's uncertainty, and RSS urges caution. Regional changes larger than a few tenths of a metre per second are more trustworthy.
  • V3.1, V3.0, V2.0, V1.1 and the near-real-time CCMP-NRT differ in background, inputs and adjustments, so do not splice them into one time series. V3.1 and V3.0 are identical before 2012-07-02.
  • ASCAT-C winds and moored buoy winds were withheld from the V3.x analysis for independent validation, so comparing CCMP with them is an independent check.
  • Each monthly RSS update leaves out the last day of the month, which arrives with the next update. When downloading the latest month, check that the last-day file is there.
  • Values exist over land (from the background), but RSS advises against using them. Satellite retrievals influenced by sea ice are excluded from the analysis, so values in ice-covered areas are also close to the background.
  • The monthly w (scalar mean speed) can differ greatly from the speed computed from the vector-mean u and v. For wind stress or energy calculations, it is safer to work from the 6-hourly files.
  • The dataset DOIs on the RSS page (10.56236/RSS-uv6h30, RSS-uv1m30) are labelled Version 3.0. If you used V3.1, cite the PO.DAAC V3.1 DOI as well to make the version clear.

2023-08-25 · Info · CCMP V3.1 released (1993 to present)

V3.1 uses the same processing system as V3.0, but from January 2021 adjusts ERA5 with the near-real-time OSCAR, and ingests AMSR2 V8.2 and ASCAT-B (from 2012-12-13). These changes allow low-latency production to continue, and values before 2012-07-02 are identical to V3.0.

2023-02-13 · Info · CCMP V3.0 released — background changed from ERA-Interim to ERA5

With ERA-Interim production having ended in July 2019, V3.0 switched the background to ERA5 neutral-stability winds and added current, wind-speed-distribution and seasonal vector adjustments plus regional radiometer corrections. RSS reports better accuracy above 15 m/s and more reliable long-term trends; the record starts in 1993, when the OSCAR current dataset begins.
