JRA-25

Japanese 25-year Reanalysis (JRA-25), including its JCDAS extension

Discontinued

No longer updated

JMA terminated the provision of JRA-25 and JCDAS data in February 2014; JRA-55 took their place. The data are no longer available from JMA, but NCAR GDEX (d625000) still holds the record from 1979 to January 2014. Unless you are reproducing older studies, use JRA-3Q (current) or JRA-55 instead.

Successor: JRA-55 — 1958 to January 2024, TL319 (about 55 km), 60 levels, 4D-Var. JRA-55 itself stopped updating at the end of January 2024, so if you need recent years, use its successor JRA-3Q (September 1947 to present, https://gdex.ucar.edu/datasets/d640000/).

Note on period: The JRA-25 reanalysis proper covers 1979–2004; from 2005 it is continued by JCDAS, the real-time operation of the same system. The last data in the NCAR copy (d625000) are for 18 UTC on 31 January 2014.

How to read the resolution
  • Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
  • Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
  • Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
  • The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.

Overview

JRA-25 is a joint research project between JMA and CRIEPI and the first long-term global atmospheric reanalysis undertaken in Asia, covering 1979–2004. It uses the JMA operational 3D-Var assimilation and forecast system (T106L40, model top 0.4 hPa) and was the first reanalysis to assimilate wind profile retrievals surrounding tropical cyclones (TCR), SSM/I snow coverage and digitized Chinese snow depth data. From 2005 it was extended in real time by JCDAS (the JMA Climate Data Assimilation System) using the same system, and in 2014 it was replaced by JRA-55.

What changes with the successor

JRA-25 → JRA-55

Transition: 2014-02

JRA-55 is JMA's second-generation reanalysis, rerun from 1958 with 4D-Var instead of 3D-Var and nearly twice the horizontal resolution. Once JRA-55 was released, JRA-25 and JCDAS provision ended in February 2014. JRA-55 itself ended in January 2024, so anyone migrating now should consider JRA-3Q as well.

Assimilation scheme 3D-Var 4D-Var (with T106 inner model) — the first reanalysis to use 4D-Var over this whole period
Satellite radiance bias correction Adaptive method (Sakamoto et al. 2009) Variational bias correction (VarBC; Dee et al. 2009)
Greenhouse gases CO2 constant at 375 ppmv Annual mean CO2, CH4 and N2O observations interpolated to daily values
Known problems addressed Cold bias in the lower stratosphere, dry bias over the Amazon basin, poor temporal consistency of temperature analyses Reduced lower-stratospheric cold bias, smaller Amazon dry bias, more temporally consistent temperature analyses (new issues reported: warm bias in the upper troposphere, energy budget imbalance, excessive tropical precipitation, unrealistic trend in tropical cyclone intensity)
Variable names and grids GrADS-style names (e.g. TMPprs, PRMSLmsl, CPRATsfc); 1.25° and 2.5° latitude–longitude and T106 Gaussian grids Lower-case abbreviations in the file names (e.g. tmp, prmsl, cprat); 1.25° latitude–longitude and TL319 Gaussian grids (both in GRIB1)
Distribution Directly from JMA (ended February 2014) / NCAR d625000 and d625001 NCAR d628000 and d628001 (with the companion products JRA-55C and JRA-55AMIP), DIAS

Things to watch when switching

  • The two reanalyses use different models and assimilation, so their climatologies and trends differ. Apart from comparisons over 1979–2004, do not splice them into one time series.
  • JRA-25 holds CO2 fixed at 375 ppmv, which can make its long-term temperature and radiation trends differ from JRA-55. Keep this in mind when reproducing trend results from older papers.
  • Scripts from the JRA-25 era often assume GrADS-style variable names such as TMPprs. JRA-55 files use a different naming scheme, so the reading code has to be updated first.
  • JRA-55 also stopped updating in January 2024. If you need recent years, move to JRA-3Q, and check its licence (non-commercial) and the change in precipitation units at the same time.

Available variables

Main variables from the JMA JRA-25 table of available elements (6-hourly). Names are those used in the GrADS control files (element + level abbreviation); files are GRIB1. Precipitation is a 6-hourly mean precipitation rate (mm/day).

Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show

Analyses (anl_*) are instantaneous fields every 6 hours (00, 06, 12, 18 UTC), and forecast diagnostics (fcst_phy2m) are averages over the preceding 6 hours. In JRA-25 file names, the date indicates the valid time for instantaneous fields and the end of the averaging period for average diagnostic fields (e.g. fcst_phy2m.1981010100 = average from 18 UTC 31 December 1980 to 00 UTC 1 January 1981). Precipitation is a 6-hourly mean rate (mm/day), not an accumulated amount.

  • This is the opposite of JRA-55, whose file dates indicate the beginning of the averaging period. When using both, align the averaged fields or they will be offset by 6 hours.
  • Besides 6-hourly means, fcst_phy2m includes extremes such as maximum and minimum 2 m temperature during 6 hours (TMAXsfc, TMINsfc), maximum surface wind during 6 hours (WSMXsfc) and maximum hourly precipitation during 6 hours (PRMXsfc).
  • The JMA element table does not state whether some fcst_phy2m elements (precipitable water, total cloud cover, sea surface temperature) are averages or instantaneous; the general rule for this category (6-hourly mean) has been applied.

How to get the data

Practical tips

  • Data from 2005 onwards are not the JRA-25 reanalysis proper but JCDAS, the real-time operation of the same system. State in your paper when the period you used includes JCDAS.
  • The terms of use for the NCAR copy limit use to research, prohibit presenting edited data as official products and redistributing the data (including derived products) to third parties, and require you to send JMA a copy of resulting publications.
  • For new work, use JRA-55 or JRA-3Q. With 3D-Var and low resolution, JRA-25 is inferior to both in many respects.
