CERA-20C¶
ECMWF Coupled Reanalysis of the 20th Century
Discontinued
No longer updated
A one-off production covering 1901–2010; it is not updated. Its main distribution route, the ECMWF Public Datasets service (web interface and Web API), was decommissioned on 1 June 2023, and ECMWF lists no alternative access for CERA-20C, so there is currently no public download. Users who need the data must contact ECMWF support; no public mirror (e.g. NCAR GDEX) has been found.
Successor: None (ERA5 recommended for the atmosphere from 1940) — ECMWF has not yet released a follow-on coupled reanalysis covering the whole 20th century. For the atmosphere alone, use ERA-20C (same observing strategy; available from NCAR GDEX); from 1940 onwards, use ERA5.

How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
CERA-20C is ECMWF's 10-member ensemble of coupled climate reanalyses of the 20th century (1901–2010), produced in the ERA-CLIM2 project. It reconstructs past weather and climate of the atmosphere, ocean, land, ocean waves and sea ice by coupling the IFS atmosphere, land and wave components with the NEMO ocean and LIM2 sea-ice models, using a variational method with a common 24-hour assimilation window so that atmosphere and ocean remain mutually consistent. As in ERA-20C, only surface pressure and marine wind observations are assimilated in the atmosphere; in the ocean, temperature and salinity profiles are assimilated, and the air–sea interface is relaxed towards HadISST2 monthly sea-surface temperature.
Available variables¶
Main atmospheric and surface parameters, checked against the ECMWF CERA-20C dataset page and the ECMWF Parameter Database (ECMWF GRIB short names). Ocean and sea-ice fields are reported to have been distributed as separate NetCDF files, but no official list of their variable names could be found, so they are not listed. All parameters are available for each of the 10 ensemble members.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
Analysis fields are instantaneous values every 3 hours. Accumulated parameters such as precipitation, radiation and heat fluxes come from forecasts issued daily from 18 UTC and are accumulated from the start of the forecast (18 UTC) to the step shown.
- Step 3 covers 18–21 UTC and step 6 covers 18 UTC to 00 UTC the next day. Obtain 3-hourly amounts by differencing adjacent steps.
- For instantaneous forecast fields, the validity time is 18 UTC + step (step 6 = 00 UTC the next day).
- In the monthly means of daily means, accumulated parameters are averages of step 24 only, and accumulations that cross month boundaries are cut and spliced to fall within the calendar month (this may not be visible in the GRIB headers).
- To convert accumulated radiation or heat fluxes (J m-2) to mean fluxes (W m-2), divide by the accumulation period in seconds.
- Every field is provided separately for each of the 10 ensemble members.
instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time

How to get the data¶
- ECMWF CERA-20C dataset page — Documentation only (no download)
- For data access questions, the page points to the ECMWF/C3S user support channels. The former web download and Web API (ecmwfapi, dataset=cera20c) were closed on 1 June 2023.
- ECMWF Support Portal (data access requests) — Support request
- The only route ECMWF offers since public downloads closed. The data remain in the MARS archive (class=ep), but MARS access for users outside ECMWF Member and Co-operating States may require a separate service agreement.
Practical tips¶
- The ensemble is under-dispersive. According to the ECMWF Newsletter (2017), the RMSE in 2005 was about twice the analysis ensemble spread, so do not read the spread directly as the uncertainty.
- Because of sea-ice coupling problems, Arctic summer melt is too weak and sea ice accumulates year after year (thicknesses above 5 m over most of the Arctic basin). Do not use it for Arctic sea-ice thickness or volume.
- Production was split into several streams, and ocean heat content can jump at stream boundaries because of model drift. Check the stream boundaries before interpreting long-term ocean heat content trends.
- Upper-air and satellite observations are not assimilated, so it is not the best estimate of the late-20th-century atmosphere (NCAR Climate Data Guide). Use ERA5 for atmospheric studies after 1979.
Notices and change history¶
2023-06-01 · Critical · Decommissioning of ECMWF Public Datasets service — CERA-20C public download ended
As announced on 2 March 2023, the ECMWF Public Datasets service (web interface and Web API) stopped on 1 June 2023, and CERA-20C can no longer be downloaded publicly. ECMWF's table of alternatives lists no replacement access for CERA-20C.
2017-01-30 · Info · New Public Dataset: CERA-20C daily
The 3-hourly (daily) CERA-20C data were released through the ECMWF Public Datasets service (the monthly means had been released on 12 January 2017). The service closed in 2023.
