PIOMAS¶
Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System
Update delayed
Update delayed
NOAA NWS/NCEP terminated the NCEP/NCAR R1 reanalysis, PIOMAS's atmospheric forcing, on March 18, 2026, and PIOMAS updates stopped with the February 2026 data. PSC has to find an alternative forcing and generate a replacement, but funding and timing are uncertain and PSC expects a longer gap than usual. Data for 1979 to February 2026 remain available.

How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
PIOMAS is a coupled sea ice–ocean model run by the University of Washington Polar Science Center, and its output provides estimates of Arctic sea ice thickness and volume since 1979. It assimilates satellite sea ice concentration and, in ice-free areas, sea surface temperature, but no thickness observations, so the results are model and assimilation estimates rather than direct measurements. Because it has been validated extensively against submarine, ICESat and other thickness observations, it is widely used as the reference record of Arctic sea ice volume change and for evaluating climate models.
Available variables¶
PSC provides the model-grid data as one file per variable per year (name.H
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
Gridded data come as monthly files (12 months per file) and daily files (names containing "day"). PSC labels thickness explicitly as a monthly mean (heff) and a daily mean (hiday); other variables use the same layout but are not described as means. The volume time series are provided both as daily values and as monthly averages.
- Monthly files (heff.H
etc.) contain 12 fields, January to December, with no time coordinate. Each field represents the whole month - In the PSC variable table only heff (monthly mean) and hiday (daily mean) are described as means. Other variables (area, snow, icevel, etc.) appear to follow the same monthly/daily convention, but we could not confirm this in official documentation
- For the volume time series, PSC notes that the model integrates forward 365 days, so leap years contain only their first 365 days. Day counts and leap-year handling for the gridded daily files (hiday, aiday, etc.) are not documented; check the number of days from the file size first
- iceprod, advect and oflux are rates in m/s; multiply by the number of seconds in the period to get total growth or melt over a month
- Volume anomalies are relative to the 1979–2025 average for the same day of the year (PSC volume page). The base period may change with updates
instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time

Pan-Arctic time series (text and CSV)¶
| Variable | Short name | Units | Time convention | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daily Arctic sea ice volume | PIOMAS.vol.daily.*.dat.gz |
10³ km³ | day mean | One value per day for the whole PIOMAS domain (year, day of year, volume). PSC does not say whether it is a daily mean or a snapshot. Leap years contain only 365 days. |
| Monthly Arctic sea ice volume | PIOMAS.monthly.Current.v2.1.csv |
10³ km³ | month mean | The value PSC reports as average monthly volume (e.g. 17.7 × 10³ km³ for February 2026). Missing values are -1. |
| Daily mean ice thickness (areas thicker than 0.15 m) | PIOMAS.thick.daily.*.dat.gz |
m | day mean | "Mean" is a spatial average over the PIOMAS domain where ice is thicker than 0.15 m; whether it is also a daily time average is not stated. |
The full variable list is in the official documentation.

Example code¶
Download and unzip heff.H2025.gz, and also get grid.dat from utilities/ on the same server.
import numpy as np
nx, ny = 360, 120
# Headerless single-precision binary; 12 monthly fields back to back (use ">f4" if big-endian)
heff = np.fromfile("heff.H2025", dtype="<f4").reshape(12, ny, nx)
if np.nanmax(np.abs(heff)) > 100: # implausible values: re-read with swapped byte order
heff = np.fromfile("heff.H2025", dtype=">f4").reshape(12, ny, nx)
print("September mean thickness, max (m):", heff[8].max())
Practical tips¶
- PIOMAS is a model estimate that assimilates no thickness observations. In the satellite era it has been reported to overestimate thin ice and underestimate thick ice, so do not call it "observed thickness", and compare with ICESat or CryoSat-2 thickness where possible.
- PSC gives an uncertainty of about ±1.0 × 10³ km³ per decade for the volume trend and about ±0.75 × 10³ km³ for monthly anomalies. Long-term trends also depend on the atmospheric reanalysis used as forcing, so if production resumes with a new forcing after 2026, check the version and forcing before joining new and old data.
- The model's southern boundary excludes parts of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Labrador Sea. Match domains when comparing with Northern Hemisphere ice volume from other sources, especially in winter.
- Binary files may need byte-swapping depending on your system. heff and area are also available as NetCDF (.nc.gz), which is easier.
Notices and change history¶
2026-03-24 · Critical · NCEP/NCAR R1 reanalysis terminated — PIOMAS updates stopped
NOAA NWS/NCEP terminated the NCEP/NCAR R1 reanalysis, PIOMAS's atmospheric forcing, as of March 18, 2026 (announced by NOAA on February 13). PSC will have to find alternatives and generate a replacement, does not yet know whether that is possible with available funds, and warns that the gap will be longer than usual. No restart had been announced as of 2026-10-11.
