GLORYS12¶
Copernicus Marine Global Ocean Physics Reanalysis GLORYS12V1 (GLOBAL_MULTIYEAR_PHY_001_030)
Available
Current status
Available and extended every month. In November 2025 the separate multi-year interim (myint) datasets were merged into the corresponding multi-year (my) datasets, so a single my dataset now covers 1993 to the recent past. As of October 2026, no successor version to GLORYS12V1 has been announced.

How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
GLORYS12V1 is the Copernicus Marine global ocean eddy-resolving reanalysis (1/12° horizontal resolution, 50 vertical levels) produced by Mercator Ocean International. It is based on the NEMO ocean model with sea ice, assimilating along-track satellite altimetry, satellite sea surface temperature, sea ice concentration and in situ temperature and salinity profiles. Because it resolves mesoscale eddies, it is widely used for studies of boundary currents, coastal circulation and marine heatwaves. It covers the altimetry era, starting in 1993.
Available variables¶
Main variables from the official Product User Manual (PUM). Names are the NetCDF variable names (short names) in the files.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
All ocean and sea-ice fields are means, not instantaneous values. Daily fields (P1D-m) are means over a day (midnight to midnight), monthly fields (P1M-m) are means over the calendar month, and the static datasets (bathymetry, mask, mean dynamic topography) are time-invariant.
- Daily means cover 00–24 h, and the PUM describes them as "centered at noon". The file examples in the same document, however, show 00:00 on that date, so treat the time value only as a label for "the mean of that day".
- Monthly mean files and time values refer to the month (file names use yyyymm). There is no need to recompute monthly means from the daily means.
- A separate monthly climatology dataset (…-climatology_P1M-m) gives the 1993–2016 average for each month of the year; it is a multi-year mean of the same calendar month, not a specific year.
- The -m suffix in the dataset ID means "mean". This product contains no instantaneous (snapshot) fields.

instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time

How to get the data¶
- Copernicus Marine Data Store — product page — Web download (Subset, File Browser) / Copernicus Marine Toolbox (copernicusmarine)
- Requires a free Copernicus Marine account. Dataset IDs: daily means cmems_mod_glo_phy_my_0.083deg_P1D-m, monthly means cmems_mod_glo_phy_my_0.083deg_P1M-m.
- Copernicus Marine Toolbox documentation — Python / command line (CLI)
- Provides subset (cut by area, depth and time) and get (download the original files). The supported major version is 2.x.
Example code¶
Install with pip install copernicusmarine, run login() once to store your credentials, then run the script. Based on the example in the official help centre.
import copernicusmarine
# Run once (credentials are stored locally)
# copernicusmarine.login(username="<username>", password="<password>")
copernicusmarine.subset(
dataset_id="cmems_mod_glo_phy_my_0.083deg_P1D-m",
variables=["thetao", "so"],
minimum_longitude=120,
maximum_longitude=135,
minimum_latitude=30,
maximum_latitude=45,
start_datetime="2020-01-01",
end_datetime="2020-01-31",
minimum_depth=0,
maximum_depth=100,
output_filename="glorys12_eastsea_202001.nc",
output_directory="copernicus-data",
)
Practical tips¶
- In November 2025 the interim datasets (cmems_mod_glo_phy_myint_0.083deg_P1D-m, ..._P1M-m) were retired and merged into the my datasets. If old scripts still use the myint IDs, switch them to the my IDs.
- Support for Copernicus Marine Toolbox 1.x ended in July 2025. Upgrade to 2.x; version 2.4 and later require Python 3.10 or newer.
- Data from July 2021 onwards were produced in interim mode, under different production conditions from the earlier period. When computing long-term trends, check for a discontinuity at this boundary.
- Daily 3D fields at 1/12° quickly reach hundreds of MB to several GB. Use subset to download only the region, depths and variables you actually need.
Notices and change history¶
2026-04-28 · Info · [MDSOP-377] Application of retention periods to ARCO datacubes
Copernicus Marine is applying the retention periods defined in the Product User Manuals to some ARCO datacubes, so some time series may start later in the Subset GUI, the Copernicus Marine Toolbox subset and MyOcean Viewer. Original files (File Browser, copernicusmarine get) are not affected. The notice does not list the affected products.
2025-11-25 · Warning · Multi-year interim dataset merged into the corresponding multi-year dataset
The datasets cmems_mod_glo_phy_myint_0.083deg_P1D-m and cmems_mod_glo_phy_myint_0.083deg_P1M-m were retired and their data moved into cmems_mod_glo_phy_my_0.083deg_P1D-m / _P1M-m. Code that uses the myint IDs must be updated.
2025-07 (day not given) · Warning · Copernicus Marine Toolbox 1.x end of support
Toolbox 1.x (latest 1.3.6) is no longer supported and should be replaced with 2.x; version 2.4.0 dropped support for Python 3.9.
2024-11-26 · Info · Interim dataset extended every month (Month-1)
The interim dataset is now extended every month closer to real time, until Month-1 (the offset was then 4 months).
2023-11-30 · Info · Time extension, addition of an interim dataset and renaming of datasets
The multi-year datasets were extended to June 2021, and months from July 2021 onwards switched to monthly "interim" generation in new interim datasets. Several datasets were renamed at the same time (e.g. cmems_mod_glo_phy_my_0.083_P1D-m became cmems_mod_glo_phy_my_0.083deg_P1D-m).
