GPM IMERG V07¶
Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) Version 07
Update delayed
Update delayed
The research-grade Final Run (V07) ends with data for 30 September 2025: its parent products (GPROF, CORRA) are moving to V08, and continuing with the V07 code would create discontinuities. In its August 2026 update NASA said it "seems more likely that IMERG V08 Final Run will be released in the fall of 2026", reprocessed from 1998. The near-real-time Early and Late Runs continue daily in a "hybrid" mode — the V07 algorithm ingesting GPROF V08 (file version V07C) — and ran through 11 October 2026 when checked on 2026-10-12.

Note on period: V07B Final (GPM_3IMERGHH, DF, M) covers 1998-01-01 to 2025-09-30 (on 7 November 2024 the start was extended from June 2000 back to January 1998, using GridSat-B1 IR data before June 2000). Early and Late (GPM_3IMERGHHE, HHL, DE, DL) also run from 1998-01-01 to the present; when checked on 2026-10-12 the latest GES DISC file was for 2026-10-11. There are no Final data from October 2025 onward until V08 Final is released.
How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
IMERG is NASA's multi-satellite precipitation product, combining information from the GPM satellite constellation: passive microwave (PMW) precipitation estimates are intercalibrated to the GPM Core Observatory combined radar–radiometer product (CORRA), and gaps are filled by morphing the microwave estimates along the motion of rain systems and by geostationary IR estimates in a Kalman filter, giving global half-hourly 0.1° precipitation. It comes as near-real-time Early (~4 hours after observation) and Late (~14 hours) Runs, and a research-grade Final Run calibrated to monthly gauge analyses and released about 4 months later. V07 reprocesses the whole record from 1998, including the TRMM era, and supersedes all prior IMERG versions as well as the TRMM-based TMPA products (3B42, 3B43).
What changes with the successor¶
IMERG V06 → IMERG V07¶
Transition: 2023-07
The input microwave algorithm (GPROF2021) and the calibration scheme changed throughout, precipitation over snow- and ice-covered surfaces and the polar regions was filled in for the first time, and the record was extended back to January 1998. Key variable names also changed (precipitationCal → precipitation), so code written for V06 needs updating.

Things to watch when switching
- Do not splice V06 and V07 into one time series; download the whole period again as V07 (V06 is no longer distributed).
- Scripts with '06' in paths or
precipitationCalin variable names must change to '07' andprecipitation. - High-latitude and winter results come from areas that are newly filled in V07, so check the Quality Index alongside them.

IMERG V07 → IMERG V08 Planned¶
Transition: 2026
With the parent products (GPROF, CORRA) moving to V08, V07 Final stopped at September 2025. V08 Final, reprocessed from 1998, is expected in fall 2026, and V08 Early and Late after that (no sooner than winter 2026). When checked on 2026-10-12, no V08 IMERG collection was yet registered in NASA CMR.

|---|---|---|
| Final Run | V07B, stopped at 1998-01 to 2025-09-30 | V08 Final, reprocessed from 1998-01 and then updated with the usual ~4-month latency (April 2026 notice: 'summer of 2026' → August notice: 'more likely … fall of 2026') |
| Early and Late Runs | V07B (V07 algorithm + V07 inputs) | From 2026-03-04, hybrid V07C (V07 algorithm + GPROF V08 input; CORRA calibration set to seasonal climatological values from 2026-03-01) → switch to V08 no sooner than winter 2026, with a retrospective V08 Early and Late record from 1998 provided before the switch |
| Inputs (parent products) | GPROF and CORRA V07 | GPROF and CORRA V08 (reprocessing of all TRMM/GPM products to V08 started 2026-03-09) |
Things to watch when switching
- If you need research-grade (Final) data after September 2025, wait for V08 Final, or use the Late Run (V07C) as a stopgap and state that it is a different run.
- When V08 Final is released, all values from 1998 will change, so do not mix it with climatologies or trends built from V07.

Available variables¶
Main variables from the GES DISC V07 collection metadata. In the half-hourly and monthly files (HDF5) they sit in the Grid group (auxiliary variables in Grid/Intermediate); in the daily files (netCDF4) they are at the top level. Arrays are ordered (time, lon, lat), so swap axes before plotting maps. precipitation is the recommended variable for most users.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
Half-hourly precipitation is a rate in mm/hr. IMERG principal investigator George Huffman explains that "the IMERG value is provided from a single snapshot sometime during the half-hour period" and is taken as representative of the entire half hour, so the half-hour amount (mm) is rate × 0.5. File times mark the start of the interval, and file names carry the start and end times (e.g. S013000-E015959 = 01:30–01:59:59 UTC). Daily data are the mean rate over the 00–24 UTC day × 24 (mm/day), and monthly data are the mean rate for the month (mm/hr).
- Summing half-hourly values as they are doubles the precipitation amount. For hourly totals, sum (value × 0.5), or multiply the mean rate (mm/hr) by the number of hours.
- From V07, daily data (GPM_3IMERGDF, DE, DL) are computed by first taking the mean precipitation rate of the valid half-hourly values for the data day and then multiplying by 24, which minimizes the dry bias of the simple daily totals used before V07. The number of valid samples is in
precipitation_cnt. - The daily data day is 00–24 UTC (file name S000000-E235959), i.e. 09:00 to 09:00 the next day in Korea Standard Time. If you need daily totals for a local-time day, sum the half-hourly data yourself.
- Monthly
precipitationis also in mm/hr, so the monthly amount (mm) is value × the number of hours in the month (e.g. 31 days × 24). - Final half-hourly values are adjusted to agree with the month's satellite–gauge total, while Early and Late receive only a monthly climatological calibration derived from the Final Run. The three runs give different values for the same time.
timeandtime_bndsare in 'seconds since 1980-01-06 00:00:00 UTC' in the half-hourly and monthly files and 'days since 1980-01-06 00:00:00Z' in the daily files (the GPS epoch).
instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time

How to get the data¶
- NASA GES DISC (Earthdata Cloud, HTTPS) — HTTPS download / earthaccess / Earthdata Search / subsetting
- Final is GPM_3IMERGHH (half-hourly), GPM_3IMERGDF (daily) and GPM_3IMERGM (monthly); Early is GPM_3IMERGHHE and GPM_3IMERGDE; Late is GPM_3IMERGHHL and GPM_3IMERGDL. Files are at https://data.gesdisc.earthdata.nasa.gov/data/GPM_L3/GPM_3IMERGDF.07/YYYY/MM/ and require a free Earthdata Login. The legacy server (gpm1.gesdisc.eosdis.nasa.gov) may close any time after 30 September 2026, so update the URLs in your scripts.
- Earthdata Cloud OPeNDAP — OPeNDAP (Hyrax) — variable and spatial subsetting
- Per-file OPeNDAP URLs are listed in CMR and Earthdata Search results. The GES DISC GrADS Data Server (GDS) is being discontinued from March 2026.
- Direct access in AWS us-west-2 (S3) — Cloud storage (S3, from within us-west-2 only)
- Stored under paths such as s3://gesdisc-cumulus-prod-protected/GPM_L3/GPM_3IMERGHH.07/; temporary credentials are required.
- NASA PPS (GPM data directory) — HTTPS / FTP (PPS registration required)
- The fastest place to get new data. Early and Late GeoTIFF (GIS) files and the 3-hour and 7-day files are also here.
- NASA Giovanni — Web maps and time-series analysis
- Handy for checking magnitudes with area-mean time series or maps before downloading.
Example code¶
Downloads Final daily data for the Korean Peninsula for July 2023 with earthaccess and opens them with xarray. You will be asked for your Earthdata username and password on the first run. Daily files are ordered (time, lon, lat), so transpose before plotting maps.
import earthaccess
import xarray as xr
earthaccess.login() # free NASA Earthdata account
results = earthaccess.search_data(
short_name="GPM_3IMERGDF", version="07",
temporal=("2023-07-01", "2023-07-31"),
bounding_box=(124, 33, 132, 39), # (west, south, east, north)
)
files = earthaccess.download(results, "imerg_daily")
ds = xr.open_mfdataset(files, combine="by_coords")
pr = ds["precipitation"].sel(lon=slice(124, 132), lat=slice(33, 39)) # mm/day, 00–24 UTC
pr = pr.transpose("time", "lat", "lon")
print(pr.mean("time"))
# Half-hourly files (HDF5) need the group: xr.open_dataset(f, group="Grid")
# Half-hour amount (mm) = precipitation (mm/hr) * 0.5
Practical tips¶
- Half-hourly
precipitationis a rate in mm/hr. Adding 48 half-hourly files as they are gives twice the daily total. Convert half-hourly values with × 0.5 and monthly values (mm/hr) with × the hours in the month. - Early, Late and Final differ in algorithm (forward-only vs forward-and-backward morphing) and calibration (climatological vs monthly gauge), so treat them as different datasets. Use Final for long-term work, and if you append recent months from the Late Run, say so in your paper.
- There are no Final data after September 2025. When V08 Final arrives, the whole record from 1998 will change, so do not mix V07 and V08 — download the full period again.
- V07C in Early and Late file names (from 2026-03-04) is the hybrid run: V07 algorithm with GPROF V08 input. Its inputs differ from the earlier V07B period, so small discontinuities are possible.
- V07 is the first version to include microwave estimates over snow- and ice-covered surfaces, but these polar estimates have lower confidence, and NASA notes that snowfall amounts are deficient. Uncertainty is also large over mountainous terrain.
- Data before June 2000 (1998-01 to 2000-05) are built from GridSat-B1 IR data; the release notes warn of lower quality and inconsistencies and recommend avoiding this period unless necessary. Also read the caveats document for the TRMM era (before 2014).
- The daily data day is 00–24 UTC. Align day boundaries when comparing with station observations reported for local-time days.
- Half-hourly and monthly files are HDF5; daily files are netCDF4. Arrays are stored as (lon, lat), so plotting them directly rotates the map by 90°.
Notices and change history¶
2026-10-21 · Warning · Ingest & Archive Migration to interrupt GES DISC data ingestion (Oct. 28-30)
As part of NASA's planned Consolidated Ingest and Archive (I&A) system migration, GES DISC will experience temporary interruptions to new data ingestion and availability from October 28, 5:00 p.m. to October 30, 9:00 a.m. ET. Existing data search and download services are expected to remain operational. New data ingestion will resume and newly ingested data will become available once migration is complete.
2026-09-30 · Warning · Access to GES DISC legacy data servers (gpm1 and others) to end — move to Earthdata Cloud
The notice on gpm1.gesdisc.eosdis.nasa.gov states that "access to this server (and all other GES DISC data servers) will end no earlier than September 30th 2026" and that users will need to transition to Earthdata Cloud (anonymous FTP access is already gone). When checked on 2026-10-12 the server still responded. Point your scripts to data.gesdisc.earthdata.nasa.gov (HTTPS) or use earthaccess.
2026-08-06 · Warning · Update to the IMERG V08 Transition Schedule — Final likely fall 2026, Early and Late no sooner than winter 2026
The team is still waiting for a finalized V08 version of one parent product and so cannot begin reprocessing the record from 1998; it now says V08 Final "seems more likely" to be released in fall 2026. Early and Late will switch after the V08 Final release and the retrospective record, and remain in "hybrid" (V07C) mode until then.
2026-04-28 · Critical · IMERG V08 Transition Schedule — the V07 Final record ends in September 2025
Because the parent products CORRA and GPROF are being upgraded to V08 and running the V07 code beyond September 2025 could create discontinuities, "the V07 record ends in September 2025." Research-grade Final data have a gap from October 2025 until V08 Final (reprocessed from 1998) is released.
2026-03-04 · Info · GPM Version 08 Reprocessing — IMERG Early and Late switch to GPROF V08 input (V07B → V07C)
As part of the V08 reprocessing of all GPM products, "as of March 4, IMERG Early and Late have been produced using GPROF v08 as input", keeping the V07 algorithm; the file-name minor version changed to V07C to mark this.
2026-01-15 · Info · GrADS Data Server (GDS) Service Will Be Discontinued No Earlier Than March 27, 2026 — includes IMERG
GES DISC announced that the GDS service, including IMERG (Early, Late and Final half-hourly, daily and monthly, and the land/sea mask), will be discontinued no earlier than 27 March 2026. The same data are available in the Earthdata Cloud through HTTPS and subsetting services.
2024-11-07 · Info · V07B Final record extended back to January 1998 (TRMM era included)
The start of V07B was moved from June 2000 back to January 1998, using GridSat-B1 IR data before June 2000. V07 supersedes all prior IMERG versions as well as the TRMM-based TMPA products (3B42, 3B43).
