ASI AMSR2 (Univ. Bremen)¶
University of Bremen ASI (ARTIST Sea Ice) Sea Ice Concentration from AMSR-E/AMSR2, version 5.4
Available
Current status
Near-real-time production continues. When checked on 2026-10-13, Arctic (n6250) and Antarctic (s6250) v5.4 netCDF files were online through 2026-10-12, usually posted the next morning (around 06:00 server time). However, JAXA lists the host satellite GCOM-W (launched 2012) as in its "Latter Phase" of operation, AMSR2 standard product delivery changed in September 2026 (fewer deliveries, some incomplete scenes), and the University of Bremen has started posting preliminary ASI products from the successor sensor GOSAT-GW AMSR3 in an amsr3/ folder. No official switch-over date to an AMSR3 version has been announced.

Note on period: The v5.4 record covers AMSR-E from 2002-06 to 2011-09 and AMSR2 from 2012-07 to present (gap between the two sensors from 2011-10 to 2012-07). All AMSR-E and AMSR2 data were reprocessed in 2018 with identical settings as v5.4; earlier near-real-time data are v5.3 (from 2017-05-02) and v5.2. The yearly bundles on PANGAEA run to 2019 for AMSR2; later years are on the University of Bremen server.
How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
Daily Arctic and Antarctic sea ice concentration produced by the University of Bremen with the ASI (ARTIST Sea Ice) algorithm, which uses the polarization difference of the AMSR-E and AMSR2 89 GHz channels. Its 6.25 km grid is four times finer than the 25 km grids of the NOAA/NSIDC CDR and the OSI SAF climate records, so it resolves ice edges, polynyas and leads much better. Updated every morning, it is widely used for icebreaker routing, field campaign planning and operational ice charting, and is available without login as HDF4, GeoTIFF, netCDF and PNG maps. It was not designed as a climate data record, so long-term trends are best checked against the 25 km climate records.
What changes with the successor¶
ASI AMSR2 v5.4 → ASI AMSR3 (preliminary) Planned¶
Transition: 2026-08
With the AMSR2 host GCOM-W in its latter phase and JAXA releasing products from the successor AMSR3 (GOSAT-GW) since 2026-06-30, the University of Bremen has started posting preliminary AMSR3-based ASI concentrations in an amsr3/ folder. As of 2026-10-13, AMSR2 v5.4 is still being updated, and no official version name, switch-over date or reprocessing plan for the AMSR3 product has been announced.
| Aspect | ASI AMSR2 v5.4 | ASI AMSR3 (preliminary) |
|---|---|---|
| Input sensor | GCOM-W1 AMSR2 (2012-07 onward) | GOSAT-GW AMSR3 (observing since 2025-08-11) |
| Period | 2012-07 to present (2002-06 onward including AMSR-E) | Preliminary concentration record from 2026-06-09 (readme); gridded brightness temperatures from 2025-08-11 |
| Server folder | amsr2/asi_daygrid_swath/ (n6250, s6250, n3125, s3125, swath) | amsr3/asi_daygrid_swath/, amsr3/tb_daygrid_swath/ (n6250, n12500, n25000, s6250, s12500, s25000) |
| File names | asi-AMSR2-n6250-YYYYMMDD-v5.4.nc | Gridded brightness temperatures as amsr3-n6250-YYYYMMDD-89h.hdf. Concentration file names could not be checked on 2026-10-13 because the folder listing is closed to automated reading |
| Version and status | v5.4 (2018 reprocessing, operational) | Preliminary data, no version label or validation document |
Things to watch when switching
- AMSR2 and the preliminary AMSR3 product differ in calibration and swath width, so values for the same day may differ. Do not splice them into one series before an official comparison is published.
- Make automated download scripts check the date of the newest file in amsr2/ so that you notice if AMSR2 updates stop.
- Preliminary data may be reprocessed or changed later; state the download date and that the data are preliminary in publications.

ASI v5.2 and v5.3 (near real time) → ASI v5.4¶
Transition: 2018
In 2018 all AMSR-E and AMSR2 data for both poles were reprocessed with the same parameters, settings and software as v5.4. Near-real-time data produced before that are v5.3 (from 2017-05-02) and v5.2.
| Aspect | ASI v5.2 and v5.3 (near real time) | ASI v5.4 |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | Near-real-time processing by period (v5.2; v5.3 from 2017-05-02) | Whole period 2002 to present reprocessed with identical settings |
| Regional 3.125 km maps | Produced in near real time | Still produced, but not reprocessed in v5.4 |
| Value encoding | Older files: concentration 0–200, land/missing 255 | Concentration 0–100, land/missing 120 |
Things to watch when switching
- Replace any v5.2 or v5.3 files you downloaded earlier with v5.4; the version string at the end of the file name tells them apart.
- Code written for the older files uses a different value range (0–200, 255) and would read concentrations twice as high if applied unchanged.

Available variables¶
The user guide says only that each daily file holds one two-dimensional sea ice concentration field (%) and does not give the variable name inside the netCDF files, so no name is listed here (check with xarray). According to the data archive page, concentrations are scaled 0–100 with land and missing values set to 120 (older files: 0–200, land/missing 255). Latitudes and longitudes for the HDF4 files are in the separate grid_coordinates/ folder.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
Each daily grid combines all swath data from one UTC calendar day into a single daily value (the server's note on the gridded brightness temperatures describes this as combining about 14 overpasses per day). The values are not instantaneous; only the per-orbit swath files carry observation times.
- The date in the file name (e.g. asi-AMSR2-n6250-20261012-v5.4.nc) is a UTC calendar day, nine hours offset from a day in Korean time.
- At high latitudes, where the satellite passes several times a day, a single grid value includes observations from several times that day.
- Swath data (swath/asiYYYYMMDD/ folders, e.g. GW1AM2-20200101-073D-asi.nc) come as one file per half orbit, with the time of each scan line in
Scan_Time(seconds since 1992-01-01 00:00 UTC).
instantaneous mean accumulated maximum minimum static — instantaneous: value at the time stamp · mean/accumulated/maximum/minimum: over the indicated interval · static: does not change with time
Daily grids (n6250, s6250; HDF4, GeoTIFF, netCDF)¶
| Variable | Short name | Units | Time convention | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sea ice concentration | - | % | Daily mean | Daily value from all swaths in one UTC day. 0–100, land and missing 120. Variable name not documented: the user guide says only that the netCDF files are made with GDAL and hold a two-dimensional sea ice concentration field, and neither the server readme nor the PANGAEA records give the name |
Per-orbit swaths (swath, netCDF)¶
| Variable | Short name | Units | Time convention | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sea ice concentration | - | % | instantaneous | A and B scan arrays · Footprint values for the two 89 GHz scan lines A and B (about 5 km apart), with four matching latitude and longitude arrays. The swath readme (Readme_AMSR_ASI_swath.txt) names only the time array (Scan_Time), not the concentration or coordinate arrays |
| Scan line acquisition time | Scan_Time |
s since 1992-01-01 00:00 UTC | instantaneous |
The full variable list is in the official documentation.

Example code¶
Downloads one Arctic 6.25 km netCDF file from the University of Bremen server and opens it. Because the user guide does not name the variable, the example picks the largest data variable as the concentration field; run print(ds) first to check the name.
import urllib.request
import xarray as xr
day = "20261012"
url = f"https://data.seaice.uni-bremen.de/amsr2/asi_daygrid_swath/n6250/netcdf/{day[:4]}/asi-AMSR2-n6250-{day}-v5.4.nc"
urllib.request.urlretrieve(url, "asi.nc")
ds = xr.open_dataset("asi.nc")
print(ds) # check variable names and projection
sic = max(ds.data_vars.values(), key=lambda v: v.size) # 2-D sea ice concentration (%)
sic = sic.where(sic <= 100) # drop land/missing (120)
print("Cells with concentration >= 15%:", int((sic >= 15).sum()))
Practical tips¶
- Compared with the NOAA/NSIDC CDR (../nsidc-cdr-sic/) and OSI SAF (../osisaf-sic/) in the same tab, the difference is resolution and purpose. Those two are 25 km climate records with consistency across sensors, and they provide per-cell uncertainty (OSI SAF) or a standard deviation between algorithms (NSIDC). ASI uses 89 GHz to reach 6.25 km, but it is not an inter-calibrated long-term record and has no per-cell uncertainty variable. Use the climate records for long-term extent and area trends, and ASI for detailed structures such as ice edges, leads and polynyas.
- The user guide gives an error of about 25% at 0% concentration and about 5.7% at 100%, below 10% above 65% concentration. Low concentrations carry large relative errors, so take care when locating the 15% edge precisely.
- To remove spurious ice from atmospheric water vapour and clouds, concentration is set to 0 where the gradient ratios exceed thresholds (GR37V/18V > 0.045, GR23V/18V > 0.04) or the Bootstrap concentration is 5% or less, and outside the maximum ice extent for that month over the past 40 years. A value of 0% is therefore partly the result of these filters and masks.
- Within about 20 km of the coast, land emission can produce non-zero concentration over open water. Filter this band in East Asian seasonal ice zones with complex coastlines such as the Sea of Okhotsk, and in narrow bays. Daily regional 3.125 km maps exist for the Sea of Okhotsk (SeaOfOkhotsk folders under n3125), but that grid was not reprocessed in v5.4.
- There is a gap of about nine months between AMSR-E (2002–2011) and AMSR2 (2012–), and AMSR2 brightness temperatures are converted to AMSR-E equivalents. State how the gap and the sensor boundary are handled when building a combined series.
- The server's SeaIceConcentration/ASI_CDR/ folder holds a separate 1991–2024 6.25 km EASE2 sea ice concentration record (v1, posted 2026-08) in which ASI is adapted to SSM/I and SSMIS. It uses different sensors and a different grid from the AMSR2 v5.4 product described here, so do not mix the two. No DOI or official citation has been given yet.
- During the move to AMSR3, the same date may give different values in the amsr2/ and amsr3/ folders. When checked on 2026-10-13 the readme files in amsr2/ and amsr3/ had swapped contents, so identify the sensor from the file name (asi-AMSR2-…, amsr3-…) rather than the folder name.
Notices and change history¶
2026-10-16 · Warning · Delay in the provision of GCOM-W products due to system maintenance (2026-10-20 00:30 to 10-21 09:00 UTC)
JAXA G-Portal announced that, due to system maintenance, the provision of GCOM-W Standard Products is expected to be delayed from 00:30 UTC on 20 October to 09:00 UTC on 21 October 2026, and that products will be provided in sequence after the system recovers. ASI sea ice concentration is derived from GCOM-W AMSR2 data, so daily files for this period may appear late.
2026-09-04 · Warning · JAXA: some AMSR2 standard L1 and L2 products since 2026-09-02 contain less than one scene of data
JAXA G-Portal reported that some GCOM-W standard products delivered since 00:00 UTC on 2026-09-02 may contain less than one scene of data, with the cause under investigation. A 4 September update narrowed this to AMSR2 standard L1 and L2 products, said L3 is not affected, and said the affected products will be overwritten with good products at the next delivery. ASI daily files for this period may be updated later.
2026-08-21 · Info · ASI sea ice concentration climate record from SSM/I and SSMIS (1991–2024, 6.25 km) posted
The SeaIceConcentration/ASI_CDR/ folder on the University of Bremen server now holds 1991–2024 daily 6.25 km EASE2 sea ice concentration (netCDF and PNG) with ASI adapted to SSM/I and SSMIS using AMSR2 as reference, plus an area and extent table and a report (v1.0, 2026-04-30). It is separate from the AMSR2 v5.4 product on this page.
2026-08-19 · Info · Preliminary AMSR3-based ASI sea ice concentration folder released
An amsr3/ folder on the University of Bremen server provides preliminary ASI sea ice concentration (asi_daygrid_swath) and daily gridded brightness temperatures (tb_daygrid_swath) from GOSAT-GW AMSR3. The AMSR3 readme (modified 2026-08-19; on the server it sits in the amsr2/ folder) says the preliminary concentration record starts on 2026-06-09, and gridded brightness temperature files go back to 2025-08-11. There is no website notice yet and no statement that it replaces the AMSR2 product.
2026-06-30 · Info · JAXA releases GOSAT-GW AMSR3 standard products (including sea ice concentration)
JAXA began distributing AMSR3 brightness temperatures and geophysical products on G-Portal, including sea ice concentration, high-resolution sea ice concentration and sea ice motion vectors. AMSR3 started observing on 2025-08-11 and, as AMSR2's successor, aims at continuity of use with AMSR2 data.
2026-06-01 · Warning · NOAA notice on AMSR2 product decommissioning and AMSR3 transition — JAXA AMSR2 standard near-real-time data provision ends in September 2026
