CS2SMOS¶
CryoSat-2/SMOS Merged Sea Ice Thickness (ESA SMOS-CryoSat L4 Sea Ice Thickness)
Discontinued
No longer updated
CS2SMOS (last version v206) completed its final season with the 2024/25 winter (April 2025). From the 2025/26 winter the product continues as CS3SMOS (v300), which adds Sentinel-3A/B altimetry, a 12.5 km grid and Southern Hemisphere coverage. The 2010–2025 v206 record remains available from the ESA dissemination server. Both SMOS and CryoSat-2 are still delivering data in 2026, and CS3SMOS is in routine production.
Successor: CS3SMOS (CryoSat-2/Sentinel-3/SMOS Merged Sea Ice Thickness, v300) — Operational since 2025-10-23. Resolution 25 km → 12.5 km, Sentinel-3A (from October 2016) and Sentinel-3B (from October 2018) altimetry added, austral winter (15 April–15 October) coverage, and a new file format and uncertainty model (altimetry uncertainties substantially higher than in v206). As of October 2026 no separate dataset DOI has been found; AWI still asks users to cite Ricker et al. (2017), The Cryosphere, 11, 1607–1623, doi:10.5194/tc-11-1607-2017.

| Period | 2010-11 ~ 2025-04 |
| Coverage | Arctic — Northern Hemisphere only (Arctic winter) |
| Horizontal resolution | 25 km EASE2 Grid, Northern Hemisphere (polar aspect spherical Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection, 432 × 432 grid centred on the geographic pole) — successor CS3SMOS is 12.5 km |
| Vertical resolution | Not applicable (single thickness value) |
| Temporal resolution | Weekly (7-day window) fields updated daily — each file represents one week (Monday–Sunday or the latest 7 days) |
| Update frequency | Production ended (April 2025). While operational, preliminary weekly fields were produced daily and final versions with a delay of about 3–4 weeks |
| Licence | ESA's Earth Observation Terms and Conditions (ESA distribution) / AWI distribution — citation and acknowledgement as requested by AWI |

Note on period: Starts 2010-11-15 according to the ESA catalogue. Coverage is limited to the Northern Hemisphere October–April (winter) period; summers are empty. The last v206 season is winter 2024/25, and three weeks of L4 data (4–23 February 2025) are missing because the JRA-3Q reanalysis input was unavailable.
How to read the resolution
- Horizontal resolution lists both the native model grid and the grid you download, as given in the official documentation. The same dataset can come on different grids from different providers or products, so check the grid of your downloaded file.
- Grid spacing is not the effective resolution. A provided grid that is finer than the native one carries no extra information.
- Intervals and whether a value is instantaneous, mean or accumulated differ between variables — see 'Available variables' below.
- The 'provided resolution' in lists and the comparison table is a simplified km/degree value for quick comparison. Use this page for exact values.
Overview¶
A weekly Arctic sea ice thickness data record from merged CryoSat-2 and SMOS satellite data. The CryoSat-2 radar altimeter is most accurate over thick ice, while the SMOS L-band radiometer is most sensitive to thin ice (below about 1 m); the two are combined by optimal interpolation. Compared with CryoSat-2 monthly fields alone, the product offers better temporal resolution and gap-free coverage, and it has been widely used for sea ice prediction initialisation, model evaluation and shipping-route studies. It is produced by AWI and distributed by ESA as SMOS-CryoSat L4 Sea Ice Thickness.
What changes with the successor¶
CS2SMOS v206 → CS3SMOS v300¶
Transition: 2025-10
The second major revision of AWI's merged sea ice thickness product: Sentinel-3A/B altimetry was added and the processing system rebuilt in Python. Resolution improved from 25 km to 12.5 km, austral winter fields were added, and the uncertainty model and file content changed. It replaced v206 from the 2025/26 winter (operational from 2025-10-23).

Things to watch when switching
- v206 (2010–2025) and v300 (2025/26 onward) differ in resolution, input satellites and uncertainty model, so a series joined across the switch may show a step. Until a consistent record in a single version is available, treat the v206 and v300 periods separately in long-term analyses.
- File names (SMOS_CS2 → SMOS_CS2_S3A_S3B, 25KM → 12P5KM, v206 → v300) and variables have changed, so existing readers will break. Check the variable names in the new files before updating your code.
- Larger v300 uncertainties reflect the new uncertainty model, not lower quality. Do not compare uncertainties across versions directly or filter both versions with the same threshold.
- Antarctic winter thickness is new; the CS2SMOS record is Arctic only. For Antarctic work, check when the record starts and how far it has been validated.

Available variables¶
Variables as listed in the v206 Product Description Document (PDD v1.6, Table 3). Figure captions in the same document use some other names, so check an actual file once. The successor CS3SMOS (v300) has a new file format and different variable names.
Time-stamp convention — instantaneous, mean or accumulated? — click to show
Each file merges SMOS and CryoSat-2 observations from a 7-day window (start and end dates in the file name) into one weekly field; it is a 7-day mean, not an instantaneous value. Since v2.02 the target week is moved forward in daily increments, so files on consecutive days overlap by six days.
- The two dates in the file name are the start and end of the 7-day window (e.g. 20190304_20190310). time_coverage_end is given as 00:00 UTC on the day after the end date, so the window runs from 00:00 on the start date to 24:00 on the end date.
- The PDD describes weekly fields based on calendar weeks from Monday to Sunday, whereas the ATBD states that since v2.02 target weeks are updated in daily increments. If you need non-overlapping samples, use only files starting on a Monday.
- The
timevariable is defined only as 'reference time of product'; the documents do not say whether it marks the start or the centre of the window. Use the file name or time_bnds for dates. - The optimal interpolation background is built from data outside the target week (CryoSat-2 two weeks before and after, SMOS one week before and after). Operational ('o') files can only use data before the target week, so they may differ from reprocessed ('r') files.
- Sea ice concentration is the weekly mean of the OSI SAF daily ice concentration over the target week.

Example code¶
Assumes a v206 weekly file downloaded from the ESA server, e.g. W_XX-ESA,SMOS_CS2,NH_25KM_EASE2_20190304_20190310_o_v206_01_l4sit.nc
import xarray as xr
ds = xr.open_dataset("W_XX-ESA,SMOS_CS2,NH_25KM_EASE2_20190304_20190310_o_v206_01_l4sit.nc")
sit = ds["analysis_sea_ice_thickness"].squeeze() # m
unc = ds["analysis_sea_ice_thickness_unc"].squeeze() # m
# Compare SMOS and CryoSat-2 contributions over thin ice (< 1 m)
thin = sit < 1.0
print("SMOS :", float(ds["smos_sea_ice_thickness"].squeeze().where(thin).mean()))
print("CS2 :", float(ds["cryosat_sea_ice_thickness"].squeeze().where(thin).mean()))
print("Merged:", float(sit.where(thin).mean()))
Practical tips¶
- Each file is a 7-day mean. A new file appears every day, but files on consecutive days share six days of data, so do not treat them as an independent daily series and ignore the autocorrelation. Using only non-overlapping weekly files (Monday–Sunday) is the safe choice.
- Operational ('o') files and reprocessed ('r') files can differ. Where both exist for the same period, use the reprocessed version.
- SMOS thickness is known to be underestimated where ice concentration is below 100%, and SMOS data are frequently missing over the Barents, Kara and Laptev Seas because of radio-frequency interference (RFI). Merged thickness there relies essentially on altimetry, so interpret it with care.
- v206 and its successor CS3SMOS (v300) differ in resolution, input satellites and uncertainty model and should not be treated as one record. To extend beyond the 2025/26 winter, move the whole analysis to v300 where possible; if you combine them, state the switch date explicitly.
Notices and change history¶
2026-04-21 · Info · Successor CS3SMOS — near-real-time processing ends for the Arctic 2025/26 winter season
CS3SMOS Arctic near-real-time processing has concluded for the season (final map 9–15 April 2026), and Southern Hemisphere processing is expected to begin soon. As of 2026-10-11 the start of the 2026/27 Arctic season has not yet been announced.
2025-10-23 · Critical · CS2SMOS (v206) replaced by CS3SMOS (v300)
From the 2025/26 winter the merged thickness product is v300 (CS3SMOS). Key changes are added Sentinel-3A/B altimetry, a 12.5 km grid, Antarctic winter coverage and a new file format. v206 is no longer updated, so check the paths and variable names in operational scripts.
2025-10-23 · Warning · Degraded quality in the Barents, Kara and Laptev Seas due to SMOS radio-frequency interference (RFI)
Recurring RFI removes SMOS thin-ice measurements in these seas, so thickness there is estimated from radar altimetry alone and may be higher than SMOS-based estimates.
2025-04-17 · Info · L4 CryoSat-2/SMOS v206 near real time completed for winter season 2024/25 — last CS2SMOS season
The v206 near-real-time Arctic season has ended; production will continue in October 2025 as v300.
2025-02-24 · Warning · L4 CryoSat-2/SMOS v206 near-real-time production interrupted (February 2025) — some weekly fields missing
Production of SMOS L3 and the merged L4 stopped because the JRA-3Q reanalysis input was unavailable, and resumed on 2025-03-03. L4 data for three weeks, 4–23 February 2025, remain missing.
